A place the homeless in Bremerton call “Sally’s.” It is at Sally’s that Richard discovers there is still a life ahead of him. While going through the weight of depression on his shoulders, he manages to pull through with several friends he meets at Sally’s and his dog willow. It started with his dog Willow being there from the start all the way to the end. Then at Sally’s where Richard went on to meet the man who would be by his side until the very end of the story. “C.” C will go on to be called Richard’s guardian angel.
Su-Jen’s father, Hing-Wun, sacrifices everything for his family, and he struggles at the same time; these struggles continue in his whole life. Hing-Wun works so hard in the Dragon café to make money for his family, and he does not spend a single penny on himself; but his great efforts do not acquire a better future for himself. Even though he keeps working like a horse in his seventies for his family, his wife still complains about him and does not appreciate his attitudes towards life. Hing-Wun is such a kind man who always considers about his wife and he tells Su-Jen to think of and understand her mother’s situation. Therefore, Hing-Wun’s struggle against his hard work for his family is in vain.
He alternates between extremes of concerned family man, to being a selfish self-obsessed man. Many years of being a 'hard headed business man' has created the character that is displayed in this act. This even extends to the marriage of his daughter to Gerald Croft, suitably the son of another successful business owner. Obviously Mr Birling believes that Gerald Croft is an ideal husband for his daughter, not because he loves her (in fact he later shows the opposite), but because Croft's business connections complements Mr Birling's business. This is shown immediately when Arthur Birling states, 'You'll be marrying at a very good time.'
One Big Soul Prompt: Support the idea that a major theme in this novel is that all men are part of the family of man. In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck shows theme through the hardships of the Okies. Even through the hardships they faced on the journey to California, the Joad Family helped give rides and food to other poor migrants. The Joads were also helped buy others also in misfortune. Even though most Okies were low on money and didn’t have space in their cars, they let others in need join them.
