Setting Most of The Book Thief takes place in the small, and fictional, town of Molching, just outside of non-fictional Munich, Germany. Molching is on the way to the concentration camp Dachau. Himmel Street, where the Hubermanns and Steiners live, is where much of the action takes place. "Himmel," Death informs us, translates to heaven “Whoever named Himmel Street has a healthy sense of irony. Not that it was a living hell. It wasn't. But it sure wasn't heaven, either.” (Zusak 26). Himmel Street seems more bleak, dreary and rundown than the rest of Molching but it has a sense of safety. A sanctuary if you will, where Liesel’s childhood lived and died, where she became a happy child but also became a beautiful, young woman. Over time it wasn’t just the people who shaped her, but also Himmel Street itself. The setting in The Book Thief is very important because it creates the entire atmosphere of the story. It brings the entire storyline to another level by giving such detail of the way the characters are perceiving the events around them. For example, when the bombs hit Himmel Street it is described. In some places it as “ mounds of concrete and earth were staked and piled. The streets were ruptured veins Blood streamed ill it was dried on the road, and the bodies were stuck there, like driftwood after the flood.”(12) This scene is such a pivotal part of the story and the way they have described the grotesque time, just makes the tragedy even sadder and have such a greater impact. Theme Words and stories hold tremendous value in the novel, which suggests that they are among the most powerful ways in which people connect with one another. Numerous examples of the ways words connect people turn up throughout the story. Learning the alphabet and how to create words is how Liesel and Hans Hubermann begin to develop their deep bond.
