Blood Covenant: Michael Franzese Michael Franzese is a former member of the Columbo crime family located in New York City. He has gained fame as being the only man who (apparently) has successfully “quit” the mob. His book, entitled Blood Covenant, details his entry, rise, and eventual leaving in the American mafia. In his book, he discusses his reasons for joining, the various illegal activities he took part in, and the major turning point in his life which caused him to leave La Cosa Nostra. Michael Franzese was one of the most successful captains in the Columbo crime family. A major influence in his turning towards life in the mafia was his father, Sonny Franzese. One of the most powerful captains in his day, Michael’s father was constantly badgered by police stake-outs and insinuating news reports. It wasn’t long before Michael learned of La Cosa Nostra, as well as the role his family played in it. Michael tells in his book, how in the late sixties, his father got indicted by the federal government. He was believed to be involved in numerous extortion rackets, and suspected of being involved in several murders. During his father’s incarceration, Michael came under the care of Joe Columbo, the boss of the family. A college student at the time, Michael threw away his dreams of being a doctor and, as a result of the bitterness he felt due to his father being in jail, as well as the inherent distrust he had for law enforcement, became an associate of the Columbo family. In time, Michael rose to the same level that his father did, a capo (or captain). In his time as capo for the family, Michael was in charge of many businesses, both legitimate and illegitimate.
