In 1841 he lobbied successfully for the abolition of the sojourner law, which permitted slave owners to visit the state briefly with their slaves. He also lectured on behalf of the Fugitive Aid Society. An active reporter on education to the black national convention movement of the 1850s, he was secretary of the 1853 (July 6-8) convention in Rochester, New York. He spoke out against the American Colonization Society and Garnet's African Civilization Society. In 1849 Reason, along with J. W. C. Pennington and Frederick Douglass, sponsored a mass demonstration against colonization at Shiloh Presbyterian Church in New York City.
During this time the railroad was known to be the only means of transporting gold and other valuable shipments. In 1858, Capt. McClellan that in his career led the North Army requested the help of Pinkerton to investigate the theft of wines and small sundry thefts of beggars which happened along the railroads. In 1861, there were rumors that President Elect Lincoln would be assassinated while passing through Baltimore transferring from one train to another. One of Pinkerton’s most trusted men along with other operatives were setup in various locations along the route to protect him while traveling to his inauguration.
The government started to investigate the south’s new system of slavery. President Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington fought against slavery to stop the system the south had created. U.S. attorney Warren Reese led many investigations of the new system of the south. At this time people were starting to be charged with the crime of peonage. The first person charged with peonage was John Pace.
Granville Sharp first began his fight against slavery in 1765, when he befriended an escaped slave named Jonathan Strong. Strong, unfortunately was spotted by his former slave owner, who tried to sell him back to the West Indies’ plantations. Sharp took the case to court and won, meaning Strong was free. This inspired Granville Sharp to continue to fight for slaves in court, and the number of wins grew very large. He carried on helping escaped slave until 1787, when he met Thomas Clarkson, who had published a prize winning essay on whether it was lawful or not to make humans become slaves in 1786.
People would say that he was insane because he tried to help African American escape to their freedom. He helped enslaved people go to Underground Railroad go to the North. This would show his sanity. John Brown also killed many people. He led Pottawattamie Massacre.
The Surratt family was a Confederate sympathizer and therefore, welcomed other Confederate sympathizers. When she was tried for being part of the conspiracy, the full extent of the family’s involvement in the Confederate activities was not known. At the trial, evidence was introduced that weapons and cash for Confederate agents were stored at the Surratt tavern. Many authors, such as
Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is the name of several past and present secret domestic terrorist organizations in the United States, generally in the southern states, that are best known for advocating white supremacy and acting as vigilantes while hidden behind conical masks and white robes. The KKK has been known to utilize terrorism, violence, and lynching to intimidate and oppress African Americans, Jews, and Roman Catholics during periods of turmoil. The first Klan was founded in 1865 by veterans of the Confederate Army. Their main goal is to permute white supremacy in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The KKK quickly adopted violent methods.
Almost immediately after his death a conspiracy theory had developed which was later proven true. It was believed that a group of confederate southerners were behind the assassination. John Wilkes Booth was accused to the shooter of the President, but it was known that there were other powers involved. Conspirator George Atzerodt made a statement before the trial in 1865 was uncovered. In it Atzerodt told of Booth's knowledge of a Confederate plot to blow up the White House ("Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy Theories").
