The End of The Road Essay Faith is trust, hope, and belief in the goodness, trustworthiness or reliability of a person, concept, or entity. In The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, the father has an interesting attitude toward God, but keeps his sons best interests in mind. He helps his son keep that faith in God but doesn’t feed his own body with it. The father is able to use his knowledge of God to keep his son afloat for when the time is up for himself. The father is all about his son, probably the best a father could be to protect his son.
Everyman places his faith in material things, his friends, relatives and goods. These material things do him no good. Fellowship claims he "will not forsake thee to my life's end" (Everyman 213), yet when Everyman asks Fellowship to accompany him on his journey for redemption and ultimately death he "will not go that loath journey- / Not for the father that begat me!" (Everyman 268-269). By placing his faith in man rather than God, he does not receive "any more comfort" (Everyman 304).
Francis is a great model for modesty. He never fully believed in himself, Francis always relied on God to show him right from wrong and how to correctly lead his followers. He tried to live by the words of Mother Teresa, “One perfect soul can do more for God’s glory than a thousand ordinary souls.” Another example where Francis showed modesty is when he was recruited to become Father Guardian at a monastery in Trujillo. Though he refused, constantly saying someone else would be much better at leading the monastery, but Francis felt that God was telling him to go. So he followed God’s Word and became the Father Guardian.
Since God has set them they believe that what they are doing is good as God wouldn’t set a law that was evil and that they should follow the laws as God has set the law and he is omnipotent. God has shown that he is Good through many miracles one being parting the Red Sea to free his oppressed people from slavery and the Egyptians, this again is showing that God in benevolent and will look after the people who will follow him and those who ask for help, which is what Moses did as he was trapped as they could not cross the sea, so Moses asked God what he should do. So God parted the sea as a message to Moses that he had heard him. The goodness of God is featured heavily in the first few chapters of the bible for example in Genesis 2 God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone and so created a wife for Adam. This shows that God is all caring as he will do anything to make his creation as good as possible.
If God did create the difference between right and wrong then that means that for God, initially, there wasn’t a difference between to two. With that being said, it follows that it is not possible to say whether God is good or not. This is due to the fact that if right and wrong were God’s creation, then prior to his conception of the two ideas, they did not exist or apply to him. The writer then determines that it is unreasonable to assume that God has any relation to the creation of right and wrong while also saying that God is good. If God is assumed to be good, then all of his actions are good, and this would include the creation of right and wrong.
Abraham was tremendously faithful and although he had some misgivings, overall proved his faith in the Lord. Therefore, he is often called the “Father of the Faith”. Abraham was only human. People have been known to make mistakes and so did Abraham when he brought along his nephew, Lot: “So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him.” (Gen 12: 4) Abraham and his wife Sarah (who was then Sarai) were old. He only brought Lot in the first place as a backup plan in the event that he could not have a son.
Gimpel is a man of tremendous character and unwavering spirituality. His character is exhibited when stays with Elka despite her adulterous and treacherous ways. Gimpel’s unconditional love for children that he did not father is possible because of his staunch religious beliefs. In Gimpel’s words, "In the first place, everything is possible, as it is written in the Wisdom of the Fathers (Singer)." It is evident that Gimpel chooses believe what people tell him because he has faith in them just as he has faith in God.
The angel that had saved them also told Tom if he was good then “He’d have God for his father and never want joy”(Innocence). If Tom would just accept this was the life he lived, did his job without complaint, and was good he would never need to find outside joy except knowing that he had God as his father. Songs of Experience showed a completely different view
Although this quote does not relate to his own personal life as Tolstoy was not a sinner, it may be written in the small remembrance of his father, who may have been a sinner throughout his life. Tolstoy is trying to recognize what his father may have had to go through to get into heaven. "Remember, also, how thou didst promise to be faithful unto death, and yet didst thrice deny him, when he was taken before Caiaphas." This quote reveals that Tolstoy was a big believer of doing the right thing to get into heaven. This statement also may back up another reason as to why he may be referring to his father as Tolstoy's mother died seven years prior to his dad's death.
And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” * 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self discipline.” * Romans 8:6 “So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death.
