Through these battles, Beowulf’s strength, humbleness and courageousness is revealed. These are characteristics that are crucial in defining an epic hero. However, every epic hero has a tragic flaw. Beowulf’s tragic flaw is his pride. His tragic flaw is evident throughout the novel thinking he can win them all.
One of the separations in The Odyssey is how Odysseus cannot return to his family in Ithaca because Calypso was keeping him imprisoned for Poseidon because he blinded his son, the Cyclops. Another separation is Odysseus losing all of his loyalty from the people of Ithaca. The first separation in When the Legends Die is when Tom’s dad dies in the avalanche and his mother dies of illnesses. Another would be Tom being separated from the old ways, being forced to learn the new ways of life and forgetting about the old. The final separation is Tom being separated from himself, having everyone else run his life, telling him what to do and how, not giving him his own freedom.

The boys believe that they will be rescued after their airplane crash-landed on a deserted island with no adults. They believe it is a short trip in paradise. Ironically, the boys learn the dark side of human nature: killing, stealing, and fighting. The book Lord of the Flies doesn’t offer any hope because most of the boys turned into violent savages who kill and steal. They had no solution to end it.
On multiple occasions “The men do not take Odysseus’s advice” (Bloom 20) and must suffer the consequences of their action. The men successfully sack the Ciconians city on the island of Ismaros. Odysseus tries to help out his men, giving them insightful advice, but they choose to ignore it and some of the men lose their lives. While exploring the Lotus-Eaters Island, Odysseus’s men become entranced by the honey-sweet fruit and “[he] must forcibly remove them from the balmy island” (Bloom 20) in order to save them. They almost give in completely to their desires until Odysseus, who restrains himself, rescues them.
He then takes 318 of his man to face one of the local military superpowers and wins through creating confusion by attacking from several directions at night. Religious people might say that his victory was not won just because he was a brilliant military leader but also because he had the blessing of God, much like Odysseus who had the blessing and support of
Odysseus sails away without his men and goes to Calypso. He shows that he is disloyal to his crew, leaving because he leaves their bodies and only cares about himself. Odysseus shows that he is not loyal which a characteristic that all true heroes have. Having a huge ego can affect a person in many bad ways. Odysseus’ huge ego affects his crew and himself tremendously.
He always looks to the future in his quest for freedom and adventure and refuses to quit. George builds Gribley’s character throughout the book. One of the first things Sam decides to do is scale a rocky cliff wall to snatch a baby falcon from its nest. He feels that having a trained falcon will aid him in his life ahead in the woods. Sam is a novice at outdoor life (coming straight out of life in an urban city) and gets scratched up and his ascent is clumsy.
For instance, when Bubba, Forests best friend, sacrificed his life in the Vietnam War and never gets a chance to follow his dream to be a shrimp boat captain. Then Lt. Dan loosing his legs while at combat and Forest saving his life. This makes Lt. Dan very angry and holds a grudge on Forest because he said it was his destiny to have died and not to be saved. Through the entire movie he is motivated by Jenny and loves her very much. Then years after they stop talking and lose contact she writes a letter to ask him to visit.
At the beginning of the story, Tao shows courage to follow his dream when he first broke the taboos and traced animals in the sand during the hunt. When Tao returns to the ramp without his hunted rabbit. Then volt yells “You are always late, always behind the others, dreaming, wasting time, you are a poor hunter when people are hungry” (21). This shows that the clan does not respect Tao because he does not keep up with the hunters and act responsibly. It is important because Tao wants to be a cave painter but he’s not a chosen one and he is not highly regarded as a hunter by the clan.
