Benazir Bhutto and her influence: I chose Benazir Bhutto because I think that she was quite an influential person. Of course there are many people that can be given “credit” for being influential but she had influence and achievements that went beyond the frontiers of her country. She was the daughter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Bhutto was the first woman ever elected as the prime minister of a Muslim state. She was Pakistan’s first and to date the only female to have occupied that position. After her father had been sentenced to death, she declared herself undisputed leader of the PPP (Pakistan People’s Party) for life. As far as I am concerned, the word influence doesn’t necessarily mean good things only. Politics is a filthy game indeed… No one can really know what someone is really up to in politics, but what is sure about Bhutto is that she did “leave” a strong influence after her death. Being a woman and being in politics is one thing in a Muslim country (unfortunately, unfortunately because even Islam gives the freedom to women to work), but attaining the position of prime minister is another. Her father’s death left a feeling of compassion and “pity” which played in her favor and by the early 90’s, she had amassed a substantial number of followers. She had won many prizes, such as the United Nations prize in the field of human rights and the prize for freedom by the liberal international. Bhutto revived the “dream” for a lot of the female population of the country. This is so as, girls saw her as their idol and remained in mind the fact that it’s possible even for a woman to do anything she wants if she has the will and the education to do it. The bad side of it as, both times she was in office, she was removed by former presidents Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Farooq Leghari respectively, both times on corruption charges.
