In reading “The Martyrdom of Perpetua”, she was willing to sacrifice her life for her faith, even if it went against her father wishes. I am not sure if she understood her reasoning for being so stubborn in her life choices. Therese at a very young age she knew that she would three choices for her life, marriage, live at home as a single women caring for her father or to join the convent. At the age of 14 she told her father that she wanted to join the convent to serve God. Authenticity can be dependent on the individuals finding of faith and becoming true to oneself.
She’s just self-obsessed, and unable to judge herself and her position honestly. It seems at every chance she gets, Curley’s wife likes to talk about her lost opportunities. She speaks of a traveling actor who told her she could join their show, without gathering that this is a pretty standard pick-up line. Same with the offer to go to Hollywood: Curley’s wife has convinced herself that her mother stole the letter, rather than realize the men weren’t really interested in her for any actual talent. Curley’s wife’s obsession with herself ultimately leads to her death.

Janie and Joe have a fight that leads to Janie being struck by him. Soon after, Janie realizes Joe is not the man she has been looking for. Hurston uses this section of the book to expose unhappiness as the end of a relationship. Hurston uses the motif of time to identify Janie's awareness of her marriage, telling the reader she becomes weary of her relationship.
He chose to no longer be a part of something that discouraged uniqueness. Sammy accepted the girls’ need to conform and supported them all the way, even if it meant letting down his parents and his manager, who happened to be a family friend. In the story Sammy’s fantasies reveal that he is simply bored while at work. He is stuck in this rut of his life, and craves some sort of change. One observation that I made about Faye, from A Secret Sorrow, is that she is always thinking of her family members before herself. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she is more concerned about how her condition will make Kai react. Then once the two of them adopt their three children, she takes advantage of the time she has with her them that she thought she would never have. Madera’s desire to overcome her language barrier caused her to decide to go back to college and take English courses (79). Madera had taken her weakness into her own hands and decided to fix it by going back to school.
