This tactic was used, for example, at battles such as the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. This tactic, however, tended to result in huge casualty rates and neither side made significant gains. New weapons were also used in an attempt to break the stalemate on the Western Front. At first, artillery barrage was used to inflict constant barrage on the enemy and preceding front offensives. As the war drew on, other weapons such as gas and tanks were used by the Germans for the first time at the First Battle of Ypres in 1915, and became a major tool of warfare on the Western Front.
The Battle of the Bulge World War 2 was fought from September 1939 and ending August 15, 1945, it was the biggest world war in to history of the world. The battle to end the war was The Battle of The Bulge. This battle was fought in forested areas of the Ardennes Mountains region of Belgium, France and Luxembourg on the Western Front. It was kept very secret by the Germans because it was a surprise attack. The Allied forces were to busy worrying about there offensives and were caught off guard.
For his battlefield he chose the fortress-ringed city of Verdun, a position, he correctly believed, so essential to the French that France would fight to the last man to hold it. He hoped to lure French forces into the narrow, dangerous salient, laughter them with artillery fire and thus “bleed France to death.” He was the first commander to state clearly that the aim of an offensive was attrition though he did not tell his field army commander, the Crown Prince, this. On February twenty-first, the German barrage began and for the next ten months both sides threw soldiers and shells at each other in a nightmare of death. The German Army bled as well. As Verdun was a symbol of life for France, it's fall became a moral necessity for the prestige of the German Army.
Without the help of Sir Keith Park and the Royal Air Force, the casualty number would have been a lot larger. Sir Keith Park commandeered the 11th Group of Fighter Command. Keith also created a brilliant plan for the defense of London and the South East of England. Keith was in command of the squadron that fought for the Battle of Britain. The failure of the Luftwaffe to defeat the Royal Air Force in 1940 at the Battle of Britain is seen as Germany’s first major mistake in the Second World War against the western front.
America later entered the war on the side of the Allies in , despite their efforts to stay neutral. America entered WW1 for three reasons, German submarine warfare, the Zimmerman Telegram, and economic interests with Britain and France. America entered WW1 because of German Submarine warfare. U.S ships traveling to Britain were sunk and damaged while traveling to Germany because of German announced unrestricted warfare against all ships
On that day, United States President, Woodrow Wilson, went to Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany. The proposal sent the United States into the First World War. The Allied Nations were under continuos attack by the German forces and losing ground quickly. The United States was under serious pressure to provide major help. President Wilson had to devise a plan that would provide the Allied Nations with their materials, supplies, food, and fresh troops.
One of the main causes of the war lasting so long was the failure of the Schlieffen plan. This was due to the Belgians putting up a fight that was not expected by the Germans and the British, honouring the 75 year old, ‘Treaty of London’, came to the aid of Belgium. Also, the Russians built up their army quicker than expected and forced Germany to split her forces and fight a war on both the eastern and western front. This was very important because Germany was not prepared for this war on two fronts. The Schlieffen plan predicted a quick victory over France within six weeks, which was the estimated time it would take Russia to fully mobilise.
Germans would shell British trenches and the British soldiers would be ready for the attack. The aim of this battle was to ease pressure the Germans had put on the nearby village of Verdun, using the battle as a distraction. They relied heavily on the ‘New Army’ – the civilian recruits brought in by Lord Kitchener’s advertising campaign. These thousands upon thousands of men had absolutely no battle experience and insufficient training. At 7:30 am on the 1st of July, the British began a massive attack against German forces.
Was The Battle of Somme a Total Disaster? The Battle of Somme began on 1st July 1916 and ended 18th November that same year. It took place at River Somme, which runs through Europe. The objective of this war was to gain more land, to keep Verdun and to, hopefully, defeat the Germans. This war is infamous for its long artillery bombardment that eliminated any surprise but failed to destroy the German barbed wire.
Even though that speech failed Roosevelt somehow managed to argue for neutrality but at the same time convince Congress to start building up the arms and increase the military and naval budget by nearly two-thirds in 1938. To keep their promise to Poland Britain and France declared war on Germany when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. In 1940 France fell after a week, leaving the only all that still remained free of German control was Great Britain. Americas started to become alarmed by the speed of the Nazi regimes conquering country after country. With Roosevelt believing that Great Britain was their key for America’s security the U.S. policy started to change.
