Tiffany Johnson Laura Govia Composition 2 October 10, 2012 Shatter dreams in John Updike’s “Ex-Basketball Player” The title of the poem really tell you what the poem is all about. The speaker tell you what a great basketball player he was and how often he dreamed about his basketball career. The poem tells us about a basketball player who was the best player on his basketball tea, and hold the high school that still has not been beat. “He never learned a trade”(line49) and now he works at “Berth’s Garage” (line 4). The poem implies that Flick was a great basketball and that he was the best in the county and that he hold the county record of scoring the most points.
Taking someone under your wing can be a scary experience. One of the most difficult and joyful things I’ve ever done was coach basketball. I was afraid of how to first approach the players at Los Cerros Middle School. I thought that coaching would be good volunteer work for my community. What I did not realize was that coaching these students would make me a more confident individual.
Darwin Geronimo Love and Basketball Essay Love and Basketball is a pretty self-explanatory movie. It centers around two characters, Monica and Quincy, and their relationship with basketball and each other. It is not too original in terms of narrative though it was made about fifteen years ago. Nevertheless, it manages to communicate strongly its ideas of romance and the roles each gender plays in a relationship. It is my belief that many people can relate to the struggles of Monica and Quincy.
It was me, Amanda Paul, Sharnell Jones, Lovely Jean-Paul, Verlande Ambroise, and Lovemy Jean-Paul. I was the second fastest on the team, so our track coach, Mr. Ross put me in the center. At first, I did not like the idea because I wanted to be the left guard, but when we started winning some of our games, I did not mind being the center. We were good but we did not have the discipline to become great. On some days, we would miss practices and then showed up for basketball meets.
Watching Kobe play basketball during the 2010 NBA playoffs made me want to try out for my high school basketball team. I decided that I was going to dedicate that summer to emulate Kobe. Just like Kobe, I was fueled to be the best. I had that same internal fire burning within me and the same drive that was going to propel me onto a varsity basketball roster. It is common knowledge that the fear of failure is what drives Kobe to his infinite pursuit of excellence.
The team is introduced to a new member of their team from the Czech Republic, who is the coach’s new star. Drew has to overcome this new player and keep working to get to go and play college ball and possibly make it to the NBA. I really enjoyed this book. I think the author was correct with the way he wrote this book. As a basketball player you need to be a team player not a star player.
Going to school may mean success for one person while waking up early and going to the gym may mean success to another. Here is a great example of success which does not include wealth. One of my friends was very talented at playing basketball and he wanted to play on his high school’s basketball team, but his parents were not supportive. They were afraid that he would not be able to focus
Each March Madness creates an Emeka Okafor, Joe Alexander, or Andrew Bogut. This is where NBA teams get excited because they’ve been watching them excel on the collegiate level which is tough because mostly everyones goal is to take that next step into the NBA which is another concern Stern had was players coming out of high school and turning out to be a bust in the pros like Robert Swift. It’s a huge transition from High School basketball and Professional Basketball. Analysts and reporters often questioned Stern about this being a move to make the NCAA stronger and more competitive, he denied this and states “this was simply it a business decision for the N.B.A (Why Stern Does Not Want High

I believe that in most sports such as basketball, to outplay your opponent, one has to commit himself/herself to doing whatever that needs to be done, in order to win the game. However, I believe that basketball players, especially during the critical and “heated” moments of the matchup, act with passion and not aggression. In other words, I believe that basketball players do not drive to the basket at full speed and force, commit fouls, and overall play extremely hard-nosed offense and defense as acts of aggression but more so as results of their passion for the game. Passion is “a strong inclination toward an activity that one likes, finds important, and in which one invests a significant amount of time and energy” (Donahue, Rip, Vallerand 2007:526). If basketball is someone’s passion as an activity, then that means that they enjoy the process of the game, the result or outcome of the game is also of importance to them, and they devote themselves to being involved and demonstrating effort throughout their participation in the activity.
