Andrew Davidson September 09, 2010 A Day in Basic It was just a day in basic training, or so we thought. We woke up at four in the morning like we do every morning. We then did physical training, ate our breakfast, and showered. We were then told that we were going to go to the gas chamber today. The drill sergeant asked for volunteers for supply duty. The drill sergeant said whomever volunteered for supply duty would be the first to go through the gas chamber. I thought this was great because I wanted to get it over with, so I volunteered. I’m glad I got to go through first too, because it was horrible. As soon as you got in the gas chamber the drill sergeants made you take off your gas mask. Within a few seconds the gas would then hit you. It was almost unbearable; your eyes would start burning and would tear up, snot would start running from your nose like the Niagara Falls, and you felt like you was just going to die. The drill sergeants said we were going to start our field training. We ate dinner and laid down to sleep under the stars, it was a beautiful night. I was so glad the day was finally over, I fell right asleep. All of a sudden I heard a loud sound and the ground shook, I woke up to see a big cloud of white smoke coming towards me. We were being gassed again. Along with the gas we heard shots fired, I won’t lie it was kind of scary. I didn’t have enough time to get my gas mask on before the smoke hit me. I ended up digging a quick little hole and burying my head in it. It worked temporarily, but I still had to get my gas mask on. We had to rally together and keep control of our area. I finally did get my mask on and my platoon secured the area. This was probably the longest day I have ever
