Barriers and influences on communication Communication can be a complex process. There are many potential barriers to establishing an effective communication in our every day life and when those are not overcome they may result in misunderstandings. One of the biggest influences on how a person communicates is their background. Where the person comes from is a big part of this. Their nationality, race, social status they have been brought up in all are a factor that changes the way they communicate. Other qualities like personal skills, disabilities as well as confidence in speaking as well as other modes of communication are part of the background too. Different language can be the most crippling one. Not knowing English as your first language may create a barrier as both parties struggle to communicate with each other. Even if language itself is not a barrier, culture in which people have been brought up can alter in what way they relay and understand information. From my personal experience, Polish language is a lot more fast-spoken and clipped than English. Many polite phrases and habits, like saying please every time you ask for something, just don't exist in Polish. As a result if I spoke English in the same way as I speak Polish I could be considered angry or rude without actually realising I am. Not only nationality is a factor here. Particular upbringing of a person also influences their preferred way of communication. People with higher education tend to use more 'complicated' words and jargon to communicate which could be a serious barrier when talking to someone whose vocabulary is not so extensive. Also habits of their family tend to stay with people long into their life. If someone was brought up that the way to get their ends meet was to threaten or blackmail then often those people will try to use those methods in their later life. Past
