Obama’s America A) 1. The texts focus on attitudes to race in modern America. They individually have some opinions about the theme and some of the texts state how to deal with the racial problems. The first text, “Black Is Being Seen in a Whole New Light”, is written by Yolanda Young (YY). The text tells how YY thinks the attitude towards black people has changed and it is therefore subjective because it states what she thinks. The racial attitude has according to YY been improved since the election of Barack Obama and she thinks it makes the life easier for black people. Though the text is subjective, YY also uses experts and statistics to strengthen her arguments. The experts make her arguments more reliable thus she boosts her ethos, whereas the statistics strengthen her logos. The second text, “Black History Month”, is written by Eric Holder (EH). This text is more negative towards the theme and it states that there still are racial issues, consequently that people do not talk to each other about race. EH thinks that conversations about race will help USA to achieve a future where all people are equally valued. The third text, “The Obsession over Race Continues”, is written by Walter Backstrom (WB).The text is, just like text one, subjective because the reader sees the things from WB’s point of view. It is negative towards the theme and it states that people are obsessed with race. Despite that the text is negative; it has an opinion in contrast to text two. Text two asks for conversations about the theme, whereas this text asks for ignorance. Moreover, WB uses statistics, just like text one, to strengthen his logos. 2. Text one, “Black Is Being Seen in a Whole New Light” by YY, is different from text two, “Black History Month” by EH.
