A great Greek philosopher Plato once said, "Music is a moral law. It gives inspiration to the entire world, wings to the soul and raises the thoughts of man up to the heavens. Music is the basis of order. It is the embodiment of eternal beauty and glory." Every culture has its own melodies that help build certain traditions and ceremonies within a culture. However, what makes a certain melody in one culture different from another is the instruments that are used to create them. Each culture has its own set of instruments that are incorporated into most national events, dances, and cultural events. In the Azerbaijan culture the love for music is shown not only with the wide variety of national melodies but also in various musical instruments that are still used to play many different pieces of music today. The rich musical scene is very present in the Azerbaijan culture today that many musical instruments had survived through many generations and still play a big role in local folk music. Now these instruments link tradition from the past to the present. Each instrument has its own color, rhythm, tempo, shape and other unique structure. Azerbaijani instruments are divided into 3 groups: percussion, wind, and string. Each group contains at least 3 main instruments, which are mostly used in all national melodies and musical pieces. It is believed that the first Azerbaijani instrument was a percussion instrument because in the primitive society the simplest way of making a rhythm was through tapping on something be it wood or dry animal skin. These types of percussion instruments are also divided into 3 different groups membranophones,
idiophones and idio-membranophones. Membranophones include instruments like the tabil, kos, naghara, and dumbak. Idiophones include instruments like shakhshakhs (trinkets), zingirovs (bells) and gumrovs (handbells). idio-membranophones
