David J. Holt Dr. Robert Cohen COMM 321 Essay March 9, 2012 How have you improved as a speaker in communications 321? I try to set the standards high for myself and give myself many challenges because without a challenge, life can be overwhelmingly boring. I was offered this course by the English department at OSU and saw it as a considerable challenge for Winter quarter 2012. As a journalist in the Army reserve, I have gone to many cities as well as overseas to interview and report on public affairs type situations. I have had the opportunity to meet celebrities including a famous A-list rap artist as well as the Sergeant Major of the Army (Ret) Jack Tilley.
I joined the United States Air Force in 2001 and I signed a four year contract. So in 2005 my contract was ending and I had to decide if I wanted give over another four years of my life to the United States military. I had accomplished what I originally enlisted for, but I didn't realize I was going to fit so well with military lifestyle. I loved everything about the job, the environment, the people, and the lifestyle was excellent for me. However, I had an opportunity to do something big in another city and I was feeling the pressure of wanting this new challenge.
Essay When I was in high school, I belonged to Army JROTC, and I was the first sergeant of my company. I led the drills, called cadence, conducted inspections, and I was up for promotion to captain the following school year, but unfortunately my schedule conflicted with other courses that I needed for college, and I was unable to continue in the program. However, Army JROTC was the first course that I ever took that gave me a sense of accomplishment, confidence in myself, and pride in the feeling that comes from being able to set goals, achieving them, and earning the respect of your peers while at the same time doing something in pursuance of a noble cause. I set a goal for myself to go to college and satisfy my educational objectives to prepare myself, so that one day I could prove worthy of becoming a leader in the United States Army. My life experiences and my strong desire to succeed coupled with an unrelenting work ethic and a strong sense of duty and commitment to my country, make me an excellent candidate for officership in the United States Army.
