When a teen gets to that age all they think about is driving, but when they turn that age parents just begin to worry. “Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group funded by the auto insurance industry, acknowledged the idea is "a tough sell," but noted that car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers” (Irvine). That is a big statistic to ignore. Pennsylvania had 242 deaths which involved a teenage driver in 2008, third among all 50 states behind that of Texas, 650 deaths, and Florida with 516 deaths (California DMV). Teenagers are reckless and we must do everything reasonable to prevent deaths.
Persuasion, Indoctrination, and Inoculation Driving under the influence is not only irresponsible behavior it’s against the law. It is also the leading cause of automobile accidents in the world today. MADD’s (Mothers against drunk driving) organization began with a mother who lost her child in a drunk driving crash. She turned grief into positive change; her work and the work of so many other mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers started a movement that has saved 300,000 lives…and counting. Even today, one in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime.
She also met a mother in Maryland dealing with the devastating consequences of drunk driving; she was struck by a drunk driver while in her car with her five month old daughter. As a result, her daughter suffered nearly complete paralysis. Together, they formed the first MADD chapter in Maryland (Loewit-Phillips & Goldbas, 2013). In order to bring nationwide attention to the dangers of drinking and driving, MADD began staging public protests, revealing judges and prosecutors who failed to bring offenders to justice, and uncovering the prevalence of accidents related to drunk driving. Public service announcements led to societal awareness of this issue and stricter consequences for those found guilty of drunk driving.
Case Study on MADD Debra Pitts August 5, 2014 BSHS355 Lisa Tobler MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers), has been around for more than three decades. It began with a group of mother’s who had experienced the ultimate tragedy, the loss of a child at the hands of a drunk driver and grew into a national crusade against drunk driving. It has changed and created laws in every state and developed many policies along the way. Candy Lightner founded MADD in her living room on May 7, 1980, four days after her daughter had been killed by a drunk driver and one day after burying her. The crime was committed by a repeat offender who had previously been charged with DUI several times before this incident.
Their parents will not have control of their children the way they want. And they will no longer able to guide them the way they want anymore. Matt Sundeen, an attorney and program principal in the transportation program of the National Conference of State Legislatures, reported that "When the children are at the age of 15 or 16, they do not have enough experience in life, and without their parents' guidance, these young people can easily go in wrong directions; to drugs and alcohol, for example." For example, Alicia Betancourt, sixteen years old high school girl, got her driving license. Then she started to go out without her parents knowledge.
300 deaths occur from suicide. Several hundred are also injured from falls, burns and drowning. (NIAAA, Janu) Why would you want to jeopardize your long life ahead as a result from drinking and driving? An 18 year old in the US has the right to vote, serve in the military, can purchase tobacco and lottery products, can make a legal commitment to marry someone. So if a 18 year old can decide who the potential leader of our country should be and purchase lottery and tobacco products and take a bullet for their country, they should have every right to purchase and drink alcohol.
“Youth and Gun Violence” Medical Terminology Youth and Gun Violence Violence, when will it stop? This question is asked by many parents and even youth across America. Violence with youth has spread across the states as if it were a contagious deadly virus only on a mission to take out children. It has caused fear and anger in many families and has risen in statistics rather than declined over the years. Children that are living in the poverty neighborhoods tend to see more violence than those that are living in the upper, middle class neighborhoods.
From Then To Now, the Negatives of Sororities In the past, many arrests and party busts have been made at sorority houses because of underage drinking, binge drinking, assault, annoyance reports, and just the normal cops showing up at the front door and crashing a party. Today, the same incidents still happen, and have in some ways gotten worse. Girls should not join college sororities to reduce the chance of getting arrested, hurt, and/or resulting in a bad reputation. Many teenage or young adult sorority pledges have been arrested from sorority related events. For example, in April 2006, twenty-three women between the ages of 19 and 24 were arrested for hazing violations; they were all kicked out of school and fined.
Martin Rodriguez Ms. O’Kelly AP English 3 October 2011 Editorial Essay Genia Miller had to identify the body of her 14 year old daughter by her jewelry after a horrific crash caused by texting while driving made her daughters face unrecognizable. People have the tendency to answer the phone while driving even though they know that they are at risk from having a car accident or causing an accident. Even though people are not supposed to drive while txting they still do it knowing they could get a citation because its against the law. Texting while driving has become an increasingly destructive epidemic that claims the lives of hundreds of people each year. I think that the people who are texting and driving should be penalized harder that way everybody will learn not to be texting.
Since the government gives 18 year olds those responsibilities, young American adults should legally be allowed to drink alcohol. The drinking age needs to be lowered from 21 to 18 because it could prevent alcohol-induced accidents and more enforcement should be put on preventing drunk driving. Drunk driving is a serious issue that occurs in the United States. According to the website The Cool Spot, “…alcohol is linked with an estimated 5,00 deaths in people under age 21 each year” (Too Much Online). Something must be done to reduce those innocent children from dying and it can happen by lowering the drinking age.
