Assertiveness: Assertiveness is one of the key essential skills in the modern working environment which means standing up for what you want, stating your needs clearly and expressing opposition where possible. However, be mindful that your aim is to solve the problem and get the best result and not to be seen as being aggressive. Being faced with situation such as managing difficult tenant/service users/staff, dealing with aggressive people such as drug users, mental health, or bullying at work etc. policy and procedures should be in place to handle individual situation. If handled correctly, there are benefits when assertiveness is applied such as: better time management, increased self esteem and the ability to negotiate more effectively. Being an assertive person, I noticed whenever I am faced with outpouring aggression or fear with tenants, they are more responsive to the problem and do take situation seriously. This has made me to realise that the more assertive I am the more powerful I became in dealing with difficult people. I characterised assertive style of an individual by his/her fairness and strength. Assertive individual are able to stand up for their rights but, remain sensitive to the rights of others. Staff with such style are usually relaxed and easy going but, honest about their feelings. During an assertive seminar I attended this is said to be the best style for minimising stress and maintain long standing intimate relationships. Active Listening Skills: Active listening is also an essential skill. Being a good listener can increase ones productivity and also improve relationships. It is also the foundation of good one to one interaction. Most housing jobs requires mostly one to one interaction with service users/tenants/customers etc. therefore, active listening should be an extension of the Golden Rules of an Organisation because:
