Monsanto claims they are continually researching and creating new and better seeds. If this is the case, then wouldn’t the demand increase naturally? This basically boils down to cornering the market and creating a monopoly. I think this is evident regarding their lawsuit against DuPont for trying to engineer seeds that included Roundup (a Monsanto product used as a pesticide and herbicide). Of course, this brought negative attention to Monsanto and to avoid any legal ramifications for their monopoly, they agreed to have the patent on their seeds expire in 2014.
Third, major companies, which work closely with GMOs, intend to monopolize market-foods. Finally, to prevent GMO, it should be labeled and people should be recognized how dangerous GMO for us. First of all, in the fact that mankind doesn’t have tried to eat GMOs injected a gene from another species, GMOs will not be ensured food security unlike proven organic foods which has been eaten for human history. In despite of the dangerousness, the foods have still been on our table without verification. No one can guarantee that how GMOs’ side effects will be long-term and continuous and proving safety is beyond the capabilities of current technology.
A Brief History: OSGATA vs Monsanto Family farmers and farm organizations originally filed a lawsuit against Monsanto in March 2011 in an effort to invalidate Monsanto’s patents and protect organic and non-GMO family farmers from unwanted genetic contamination of their crops and from Monsanto’s aggressive patent infringement lawsuits. Monsanto filed a motion to dismiss the case, which was heard in Federal District Court in New York City on January 31st, 2012. In February 2012, Federal Judge Naomi Buchwald dismissed the case, ruling that the farmers lacked legal standing regarding the concerns over genetic contamination and resulting economic harm. In March 2012, Plaintiffs appealed the District Court's decision to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which scheduled oral argument in the case to be heard on January 10, 2013. Lawyers from the Public Patent Foundation, who are representing the farmers have identified numerous reversible legal and factual errors committed by the judge which they assert caused her to mistakenly dismiss the case.
A’Nyiah Brown 10/30/2012 Professor Joseph DDT vs The Human Race Should DDT be reapproved for the use in the wake of recent bedbugs across the country? Through the research I have found, I see that DDT should resurface because it hasn’t been proven that this chemical isn’t harmful to the human race or animals. DDT has been known to control pesticides in crop, livestock production, bedbugs infestation, and help end the spread of the Malaria. If this synthetic chemical is actually helping others then it should resurface. DDT also known as dichloro-diphenly-trichloroethane is an organochlorine insecticide which is a white, crystalline solid, tasteless, almost odorless and was discovered in 1939 by Paul Hermann Muller.
Monsanto does not maintain an ethical culture as they let down their stakeholders ethically with the production of Agent Orange. “Ethical culture is the component of corporate culture that captures the values and norms that an organization defines as appropriate conduct” (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2013, p. 16). In the early 1980’s, Monsanto began a new venture in biotechnology and in 1994 they introduced the first products of soybean, cotton, and canola seeds that were engineered to be resistant of the herbicide, Roundup. They called it Roundup Ready seeds. 2.
I could see I there were scientific facts or data that would confirm that statement to be true and that by running the water it prevented germs but nothing has been issued to the media outlets such as the TV news stations with this type of comment to my knowledge. If this was so all companies in the fast food industry, hospitality and more would have adopted that way of preventing germs. Starbucks defended themselves by saying, the running taps were needed to meet health standards. I would say they were just wasting water and had not clear understanding of what the consequences would be once the news got out into the public. This is very unfortunate when most countries in Africa do not have clean running water and here Starbucks is washing it down the drain without thought.
Experimental research was conducted by Susanne Bügel and colleagues from the Department of Human Nutrition, University of Copehagen tested three different methods to prove the ongoing battle between organic and conventional foods. The first crop grew the vegetables in soil which was low in nutrients using manure and no pesticides with the exception of one organically approved product. The second method applied low in nutrients using animal manure also but they combined the use of pesticides, as much as allowed by regulation. And the final method was a combination of high nutrients through mineral fertilizers and pesticides as legally allowed. The three crops were planted on adjacent fields and were treated and harvested in the same exact manner for each.
Jessica Carroll Carroll 1 Lanie Rieth English 121 21 Sept. 2009 “Fat-Fighters” On April 15, 2006, Slate.com posted an article called “Junk-Food Jihad.” In this article the author, William Saletan, discusses his views on the banning of junk food in a very sarcastic and mocking way. The author expresses his hatred against this topic very clearly in this article by establishing his ethos and stating his point of views. He grabs the reader’s attention right off the get go by stating, “Goodbye, War on Smoking. Hello, War on Fat.” Throughout the article, he argues his opinion on fast food and junk food vs. tobacco. His tone in the piece, the quotes he includes, the facts and statistics that he uses to establish his authority and credibility, and his way of arguing his point without pushing the reader to choose a side, all lead up to his main argument on the banning of junk-food.
In Dan Brown’s novel, Inferno, the main character, Robert Langdon, learns how you shouldn’t believe everything that people tell you and that many people have more than one reason for doing something. Throughout the novel, Professor Langdon has to use his university-level symbology and art knowledge to try and decrypt Dante’s Inferno into a map to stop global bioterrorism. In the novel, the world meets the diabolical plans of a single biochemist to stop overpopulation. “The doors were never sealed, Brüder realised to his horror. Containment has failed.” This shows that the World Health Organization (WHO) knows that the biochemist, Dr Bertrand Zobrist, leader of the Transhumanist movement and ancient art enthusiast obsessed with Dante, had released some kind of virus to infect humanity.
Americans are unhealthy and the food industry is doing nothing to change that. Food Inc. by Eric Schlosser consulted by Michael Pollan reveals all the dirty secrets the food industry does not want consumers in America to know. The repulsive process by which our food is made and the greedy tactics of food industry executives were hidden from public view and that’s what made the authors decide to write the book (and later make a documentary on the book). Eric Schlosser is an experienced, investigative journalist whose work has appeared in prestigious magazines such as Rolling Stone and The New York Times. Prior to writing Food Inc., he wrote another book about the food industry called Fast Food Nation (which highlighted the unsanitary and discriminatory practices of the fast food industry).
