As the treasurer and controller of the Royal Navy he rebuilt old ships to become faster, which later helped them defeat the Spanish Armada. He was also knighted for Gallantry. John Hawkins formed a group of wealthy merchants to invest in trade for his first voyage. In 1555 he set sail toward the Caribbean with 3 ships. Along the way they captured and took over a Portuguese slave ship.
In 1762, the English captured Havana, holding Cuba for almost a year. HISTORY OF CUBA Cuba's first important independence movement came in 1868, when Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, a wealthy planter, freed his slaves and called for a revolution against Spain. In the end, the Cubans had to rely on the United States to defeat the Spanish. The United States declared war on Spain on 25
DBQ A constant factor throughout history is change; there was a lot of it from 1754 to 1763. The French & Indian War altered many different relations between Great Britain and the American Colonies, the most evident ones were economically, due to British policies put in place to generate more revenue to pay for the empire, politically based on control of the eastern coastline by the British, and ideologically because of how colonist’s viewed their mother country’s relationship with them. After 1763 Great Britain was in need of money to pay for the war. Britain was very successful when I came to getting funds from the colonies. From the ending of the war back to about 1651 there was a period of something known as “Salutary Neglect”.
Winthrop said they must “delight in each other, make others’ conditions our own…” (Document A). By the 1700s the New England settlers had created a colony that was very dependent on each other and God. The Chesapeake colonies had very different settlers, however. On a manifest with seventy five names, sixty four of them were men who came to the New World to make a fortune and get out of debt (Document C). While fighting the Dutch Governor Berkeley identified one third of his fighting men as single and many of which were in debt (Document G).
The Revolutionary War was a colonial fight for independence from Britain. In 1775 the battle of Lexington and Concord marked the beginning of a brutal six year war for independence. Both the Americans and the British had advantages and disadvantages, which could be put into the categories of: economics, leadership and support, and experience. Economics was a major advantage to the power of Britain but sometimes hindered the American’s chances of winning this War. The British government had a vast empire across the world, it was once said that, “the sun never sets on this British Empire”.
He seized the heights, commanding Boston and its harbor. George forced the British to end the siege, and to sail away north to Nova Scotia. Along with them fled1,100 Loyalist refugees. These people were among the wealthiest families of the colony. Afterwards, North New England and Massachusetts were free of the redcoats for the rest of the war.
Britain was, after all, the political, social, economic, and cultural center of the American colonies. Americans modeled their political institutions on British institutions; they strove to imitate British social practices; they depended on the British to buy their raw materials, extend them credit, and protect their ships. Like their counterparts on the other side of the Atlantic, the colonists exalted in the achievements of Britain, closely following the accounts of military victories throughout the empire and enthusiastically participating in the rapidly expanding spheres of trade. In fact, during the eighteenth century the majority of the people who populated the North American colonies considered themselves to be Britons. At the close of the French and Indian War (1754-1760), Benjamin Franklin wrote, "No one can more sincerely rejoice than I do on the reduction of Canada; and this is not merely as I am a colonist, but as I am a Briton."
The War of Independence was a war within a war, as not all colonials were united. There were Patriots, who supported the rebellion and were now called Whigs. After the Declaration of Independence, Loyalists and Patriots were divided, and Patriots often seized the Loyalist’s property to resell it, it was an easy way to raise money. An inspiring fleet appeared off the coast in July 1776, consisting of some 500 ships and 35,000 men, which was the largest armed force seen in America ever until the Civil War. In one of the ship General Washington was there.
There are many opinions on what historical event impacted the United States the most. Just about all events impacted the U.S. in some way, but in my opinion the American Revolution impacted the most because, without that event there would be no constitution. It started as all thirteen colonies joining together to break free from British ruling. The American Revolution consisted of many acts. One of the first acts done by Americans in December of 1773 was the Boston Tea Party, which was done to protest the British tax policies by dumping 342 crates of tea into the Boston Harbor.
Martin Luther King once stated in his book, “Stride Toward Freedom”, “Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people”. In his mind he was certain we wouldn’t get anywhere with violence. “The whites were colonized. They were fed up with this taxation without representation” (Digital History, Malcolm X). In this quote Malcolm X expresses how he was aware of why the American Revolution was fought.
