Are Robots replacing Humans? No matter how similar robots have begun to look, and even act like humans, they will never exactly replicate a human. The actual face-to-face contact between humans is crucial for people of all ages and if it is interrupted by robots that would not be good. In the article “Robots that Care” by Jerome Groopman, he discusses how scientists have started to create robots for medical therapy, and how they are currently being tested to replace therapists. However, robots are not a good medical therapy for the future because, despite how close they can come, they will never be able to have the same face-to-face interactions and communications as other humans do; they are also too easy to become attached to. The once imaginary goal to have more human-like robots has been steadily getting closer to reality. These human-like robots are beginning to be used for medical purposes, as the article shows. The article explains that these robots are being tested to be used to help stroke, Alzheimer’s, and autistic patients. For all of these medical conditions, it is a long road to recovery whether it is for physical or cognitive reasons, or even both. The biggest concerns with robots include if something goes wrong with the electronics, or if patients get too connected with their robots, or if the robot entirely takes the place of the therapist. In the article, Professor Turkle states, “robots risk distorting the meaning of relationships, the bond of love, and the types of emotional accommodation required to form authentic human attachments.” Because some of these modern robots are so human-like, people begin to get attached to them just like a person. From Turkle’s point of view, this is going too far with robots. Turkle also states that “the simplicity of the robot is not the point. The paradox is that you can get more attachment with
