The History Of Apothecary Jars Kayla Feldkamp-Moores Lakewood College This essay will be about the different types of apothecary bottles and there there uses in history. There are two bottles being described in this essay. First bottle is the Label Under Glass Bottle which was used in most American pharmacies in the late 1800's. The second bottle is a decorative Apothecary Jar used to store various preparations. Use of Apothecary bottles In history, Apothecary Bottles have been used in pharmacies to store and dispense medication. The shape is mostly for show and to distinguish them from other types of bottles. An apothecary was in history, the guy that stored and mixed medicines. These jars were just for storage of those materials. Apothecaries were more than pharmacists, since they actually acted as a doctor for minor ailments and dispensed the medicines. Now, the only ones calling themselves an Apothecary are those that are re-enacting or they mix things like cosmetics for special orders. In this essay I am going to be describing two different types of apothecary bottles, Label Under Glass Bottles and Apothecary Jars that apothecary's and pharmacies used. Label Under Glass Bottle The first type of these bottles are Label Under Glass bottles. Label Under Glass bottles or (LUG), were the stock and trade of compounding pharmacist all over the United States. These bottles were very popular from the 1800's to the early 1900's. Label Under Glass Bottles were the stock and trade of pharmacists all over the united states. Label Under Glass bottles were used to hold and store many different types of acids, bases and other compounding solutions used by pharmacist.
