All Quiet on the Western Front very strongly achieves its goal of showing how a generation was destroyed by the war through its intense use of showing how the men have gone from everyday boys in school to almost less-than-human soldiers. In the beginning chapters of the book, he is eager and looking forward to war. By the end of the book, wishes he had never been involved in the war. A dramatic change took place inside this man between his enlistment and discharge. I read this change to be an extreme form of growing up. Not the form of growing up that most young men these days go through, but the growing up a man does when he watches friends die.
