Downriver “The most rugged corners of the San Juan Mountains.” A high school field trip turns into a big reek. The book Downriver is written by Will Hobbs. There are 8 students on this trip. Four girls and four boys and the tour guide Al. They are taken on an adventure that they will never forget.
The rough Winter most likely was the cause to 70 deaths. Based on the “Background Essay”, “Then, in the awful winter of 1609-1610, another two-thirds of the settlers died.” Harsh winters were bound to happen. There was nothing anybody could do about it or prevent it. The colonists could have prepared for it, but because they did not have the current technology, they could have not possibly predicted that a rough winter was coming their way. According to “Document D”, in 1607 August through October “Summer sickness kills half the colonists” The summer of 1607 was so severe that it killed 50 people.
The book recounts the nightmare that Joe Simpson and Simon Yates experienced when they climbed the not-yet-conquered West Face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. After reaching the summit on the 3rd day, Joe breaks his leg on a nasty fall as they start their descent down the mountain. For all sakes and purposes, a broken leg at 6,000 meters is a death sentence. In a forced fit of compassion, his climbing partner Simon decides to lower Joe down the vertical face of the mountain. During the vertical descent, due to extenuating circumstances (to put it lightly) Simon is forced to cut the rope holding Joe, letting him drop more than 100 feet into a white cloud of mist and snow.
“She said that my life is being subsumed by yours and that it’s as though I’ve joined some sort of eco-cult and you are the cult leader” (Beaven-75). When Colin contacted his family, he received a similar reaction. His plan was “instead of two three-day trips at Thanksgiving and Christmas” they would “take one weeklong trip for one holiday and stay home and relax for the other” (Beaven-82). His mother did not understand because “the train will run whether you are on it or not” (Beaven-82) and that his sister would be devastated that they would be missing his baby shower. I can only imagine what my family would do if I said something to them like Colin and Michelle did to theirs.
Mr. Younger had many pleasant and joyful moments stolen from him in this novel due to his irresponsible actions. For example, one evening Ruth had received a phone call. The caller was the wife of the man that Walter drives for, Saying walter had been a no-show to work for the past three days. “Mama: What you been doing for these three days, son?” (105) Walter replied by telling her he spent his work time just driving, roaming the streets of their small are, and drinking at the Green Hat.
To surprise Elizabeth Luke hired a chief for her and his anniversary; he was supposed to be the best in town! A couple weeks later they went on a trip to the mountains and found tons of items for their home and what do you know the same chief that cooked for them for their anniversary had a restaurant in the mountains, so they ate at his restaurant and it tasted just as good as the first time they had it! 8 years later Luke had to get major surgery on his back because he had been having back problems for years, he was terrified he had never had surgery in his life. In the story “Let it Snow” by David Sedaris the first person character talks about how snow was a regular thing in winter when he lived in New York, but when he moved to North Carolina it rarely snowed. He recalls when he was in fifth grade that it snowed so much that school was canceled for several days. He goes on to say that his mother had a breakdown and kicked them out of the house, without letting them back in or even acknowledging them. They were so desperate to get back into the house that they came up with a plan to have their little sister get hit by a car so their mother would feel bad about herself and not treat them badly anymore. A neighbor found out what they were doing and informed the mother.
She told him that a certain amount is for him, and the other certain amount is for Beneathas education. No matter how much mama did not like the idea of him opening up the liquor store, she couldn’t see her own son in the condition he was in. Miracle Recovery December 15, 2006, a family decided to rent out a cabin in Big Bear for the weekend to have a blast not knowing what one of the family members had coming for them. Everyone had been so excited and had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. Finally when the day came and everyone arrived to Big Bear, the family was so eager about going out to play in the snow because they had never seen it before; so they decided to go out that very same day and find a spot they thought was open and safe. Unfortunately, after the first 30 minutes, one of them had an accident playing in the snow and had to be rushed to the emergency room by the paramedics. Everyone was so frightened; they did not know how bad the accident was.
A simple plot frames the story: the family goes on an outing to attend a family party, the fiesta of the title. They take a newly purchased van, the smell of which causes poor Yunior throw up; so before they leave for the party, Yunior's father refuses to feed him. The van, a symbol of the family's rising prosperity in the US, is a source of pride for the father, but a nuisance to Yunior, whose sensitive stomach is a figurative barometer of his family's troubles: as their prosperity grows, so, too, does his parents' marital discord. Yunior is no innocent, and he is aware of his father's philandering. Yunior's knowledge is revealed in small flashback vignettes that interrupt the party scenes.
