Abstract This paper discusses personality disorders as a whole, in regards to the three clusters of personality disorders, and also selected individual disorders in greater depth. Information included will contain symptoms, causes, risk factors, and prevalence of the disorders, as found online. Criteria for diagnoses as based on The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) will be discussed. Available treatments and prospects for the future, in terms of finding a cure, will also be covered. Information covering the effects of personality disorders on relationships, working environment, and socialization will be included. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2010) As mentioned on the Mayo Clinic website (2013) people with anti-social personality disorder often ignore the wishes and feelings of others. They tend to treat people harshly, and often are manipulative and antagonistic. The exact cause of this lifelong disorder is unknown; however it is believed to be a cause of a combination of genetics and environment, and that there may even be a link between the disorder and an early onset of lack of empathy. This essay has been taken from an online site, and is not the original work of the author. The symptoms usually present in childhood, and are fully manifested for most during the 20s and 30s. Complications of the disorder can include problems with school and work, reckless behavior including risky sexual behavior, abusing drugs and alcohol, having difficulties in relationships, incarceration, as well as an early death which is usually caused by violence. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2013) Anti-social personality disorder is diagnosed by a series of tests including lab exams, a physical exam, as well as a psychological evaluation.
