Rhonda Coleman American Literature Mr. Julian Thorton December 3, 2014 Annabel Lee By: Edgar Allan Poe “We loved with a love that was more than love, I and my Annabel”, ( http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/174151). Edgar Allen Poe’s Annabel Lee is a tale of mourning and lost love. A poem which is dark and depressing; it is deep, morbid, scary, and definitely not just a pretty poem. Annabel Lee is almost carefree and childlike. In the second stanza it is written she is a maiden; the reader could be led to believe she is very young. The narrator goes on to say their love is almost childlike; they thought no one could ever separate them. Later in the poem he calls her his bride and speaks of a love which is more than a childish love. The narrator gives speculation they are very young, but their love is as strong as if they are married. He and Annabel Lee share a love that is more than just love; it is so great the angels in heaven are jealous. The narrator believes the reason she died is because the angels are so jealous of them and their love. “The angels, not half so happy in heaven, went envying her and me” ( http://www.edgar-allan-poe-annabel-lee.com/). To lessen their envy, they kill her. This could have been the true reason for her death, or not. The poem says a very cold and chilling wind came out of the clouds. Leading the reader to believe this may have contributed to her death. This suggests Annabel Lee may have died from a simple cold or pneumonia. Maybe it wasn’t vengeful, envious angels that committed a murder; it could have been a serious cold or pneumonia caused by the cold, chilling wind. In the poem, the narrator makes it clear, “And neither the angels in heaven above, nor the demons down under the sea, can ever dissever my soul from the soul of the beautiful Annabel Lee” ( http://www.edgar-allan-poe-annabel-lee.com/).
