Salvaty 1 Sandra Salvaty Dr. Cruce ENL 2012 19-September, 2012 Anglo Saxon Judith vs. Biblical Judith In the beginning of time Judith was characterized as an Anglo Saxon Warrior in early time in the English Literature period. Judith was described as a Vulgate Bible. Judith was in the early copies of the Catholic Bible and is still in the current Catholic Bible today. The Anglo Saxon poems on the Biblical were depicted in two ways. The first type was called a chronicle poem and the second was transformed in the way the writer perceived it. Judith was written as a chronological poem with reference to the historical events of the time. Judith was described as a woman of elfin beauty whom on the fourth day did visit Holofernes. Judith was proud to serve her men and carried to their every need. She served them wine and food and was faithful to her Lord. Judith was described as a woman of power and greatness in the Anglo Saxon times. Similar to Beowulf, Judith conveys a moral tale of heroic triumph over monstrous beings. Both moral and political, the poem tells of a brave woman’s efforts to save and protect her people. Although Judith commits murder in this poem, she is being true to her Lord and a true Anglo Saxon Warrior, being brave and wise. In the Book of Judith, Holofernes is described as a drunkard and mean and hateful is what I perceived in the description. Judith pretends to be swayed by Holofernes and allows herself to be taken to his bedroom to be seduced by him. Holofernes is so drunk that he falls into a deep slumber and Judith severed his head and kills Holofernes with her sword. Judith was proud of her conquest and proudly displayed his head on her sword to all the people. Judith has defeated an evil man and has gained favor with the people of Bethulia.
