Karen Elliott Mrs. Mathis English 2327.01 June 13, 2011 The Godly Character of a Virtuous Woman “Who can find a virtuous wife, for her worth is far above rubies” (Holy Bible, Prov. 31:10). In “An Epitaph on My Dear and Ever-Honoured Mother Mrs. Dorothy Dudley,” Anne Bradstreet explores the virtuous qualities of her mother. Clothed in humility, moral strength and godliness, Anne’s mother was literally like the virtuous wife in the book of Proverbs. As we will see later, the similarities are striking and many, between Bradstreet’s poem and Proverbs 31:10-31.
Women such as Hrothgar’s wife Wealthow and Grendal’s mother played very crucial roles in Beowulf. Women emerge as peacekeepers, In fact, it specifically states, “Sometimes the queen herself appeared, peace-pledge between nations to hearten the young ones and hand out a torque to a warrior, then take her place.” Their appearance after killing Grendel, Grendel's mother, and after Beowulf was himself slain, wasn’t just coincidence, it was to further show the important peace-keeping role women played in their society. The mead hall in particular is where women had an interesting, almost ritualistic significance. The act of Wealthow serving the men mead is more than just graciousness because they are new visitors and are there to help her and her people. Her role as a woman was also to give recognition to the characters when they deserved it.
The Wyf of Bath always gets the upper hand of the relationship in each of her five marriages, and is happier in that position. In order for the Wyf of Bath to gain the upper hand she must gain the husbands power with his conscious or unconscious decision. Likewise in the tale, the old hag must gain the knights power for a relationship, but with her governing position (giving him information that could save his life) the relationship happens leaving them happy. The relationship between the old hag and the Wyf of Bath is the description of their appearance, the Wyf of Bath describes herself as old and lethargic: “But age, allas, that al wol envenime, Hath me biraft my beautee and my pith” (Line 481-482). Although her physical description compared to the portrait old hag is not as unpleasant.
Jennifer Lopez Prof. Burnham World History 10/24/12 Primary Sources Title: The Spanish Inquisition Objective: This essay analyzes the formation and features of the Spanish Inquisition as an ideology of the fifteenth century. It also explains the motives of the emergence of the inquisitorial Spain. The first cited sourced that I picked was from the book “The Origins of the Inquisition” in Fifteenth Century Spain, written by B. Netanyahu published in 1995. His master work is divided into sections regarding the Inquisitorial origins, its rulers, its failures and triumphs, and moreover about its motives. I picked this book since Netanyahu covers a very well detailed historical background about the origins of the Spanish inquisition; which provides the main sources of my first point of the essay.
She fills her troops with a will to survive for their families, gives them motivation that they will be rewarded with the outcome of victory, and also fills them with patriotism which is the inspiration to protect their country. After reading this speech out loud it gave me a better perspective on how the Queen’s tone plays a big role in filling her men with courage and inspiration. She wants to touch her troops emotionally and make them feel connected in a way that will inspire the troops to fight for their queen and the country they represent. She states that she is “nothing but a weak, feeble woman” but follows it by stating “I have the heart and stomach of a king”. To me that line is filled with a great amount of emotion, if I were one of her troops I would be greatly inspired and ready to take on any obstacle in which the act of war may
What characteristics did Antigone possess that made her seem so noble? Although virtue and a noble character have similar definitions, when applied to each woman they become very different in meaning. Penelope is viewed as a paragon of marital fidelity for her unwavering love and devotion towards her husband in Homer's book. She was a patient and loving wife and the Queen of Ithaca. She is someone who possessed
This is illustrated by Sheila’s positive acknowledgement that “fifty voices set us free”. This is further enforced by the song ‘Bolero’ which he acknowledges as a “Majestic and ultimately triumphant song”. These women were able to overcome great difficulties and hardship despite their religious and
For example I recently saw the phenomenal film Their Eyes Were Watching God. Halle Berry stars in this version of Zora Neale Hurston's novel, adapted for television and produced by Oprah Winfrey. The story centers on Janie Crawford (Berry), a free-spirited woman who lives her life on her own terms. Refusing to accept her place as a black woman in the 1920s, Janie lives life to its fullest and experiences a journey filled with great joy and unbearable heartache. I enjoyed the casting choices because the actors and scenery joined to convey a part of the movies theme.
That was where Mark Anthony came handy. Cleopatra was aware of two battles at Philippi which was a success for Octavian and Anthony(Egypt p.25) . She was also aware that Anthony was Octavian right hand and that all of the captured provinces as well as the custody of the united kingdoms went to Anthony (Egypt p.25). Cleopatra realized that Octavian can be dangerous for her so she captured the heart of Anthony. When Anthony send for Cleopatra to meet with him at Taros in Cilicia in order to assure Egypt’s loyalty to him, Cleopatra appeared in front of him as a glittering spirit, the incarnation of Isis-Aphrodite (Egypt p.26) .This incarnation was delimited by extraordinary effects (Egypt p.26).
This shows that Nightingale was always trying her to prevent illness and death. This shows that Nightingale had a large impact as she was determined to prevent death and was passionate about the care of soldiers. Furthermore, from using my own knowledge, the source’s judgement is valid as men that were in her care saw her as an inspirational figure. They felt comfortable in her presence and they gave her knick name of ‘th lady with the lamp’ as she would visit every ward at night before the soldiers went to sleep. Source 5 also supports the statement that Nightingale made huge improvements.
