Hikers need to reconcile two contradictory ideas before hiking in bear country: The odds of being injured by bears are quite remote. But you also can’t ignore the potential for bear attacks. The stakes are simply too high, so it's essential to follow bear safety tips. The Greater Yellowstone Coalition puts the chances of being injured by a grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park at one in 1.9 million. But in July 2011, the park experienced its first bear-related fatality since 1986 when a grizzly sow defending her cubs attacked two hikers on the Wapiti Lake Trail.
Upon his visit to Chicago to do research for a book that was meant to show the nation how the labor of men and women are exploited for profit, Sinclair stumbled on the disgusting conditions in meatpacking factories. There were no regulations on food preparation and distribution at the time, and Sinclair wanted to change that. He wrote The Jungle and it was very successful. His readers ranged from normal citizens to President Theodore Roosevelt. After Roosevelt read the graphic novel, he pushed for passage of the Meat Inspection Act.
Never Cry Wolf What does Tyler discover about the diet of wolves? Never Cry Wolf is an American drama film based on Farley Mowat's autobiography of the same name. The film is about a Government agency investigation of the caribou population, which is initiated because of a belief that wolves are killing those reindeers. The government sends a young biologist named Tyler Smith “to travel to the Arctic, track down a pack of wolves and observe their behavior in detail to prepare a biological report which would scientifically justify extermination of Canis lupus (the wolf)” (Summarized from film Never Cry Wolf, Walt Disney Productions, director: Carroll Ballard, 1983.) .
Alas, only small amounts of these ‘home sprays’ actually hit their target resulting in a mass contamination of soil, air, and food. Rachel Carson, a member of the US Fish and Wildlife service, quit her job as a biologist and devoted her full time to the research for her watershed book, Silent Spring. The book aimed to expose the unknown horrors of pesticides that scientists did not want the public to know about. An immediate New York Times best seller, Carson’s work had a massive impact, resulting into more than 40 bills passed in Congress to take back the environment. Carson maintains a striking message for the modern utilitarian conservation movement stressing the effects of unregulated chemical use and a push for governmental legislation with the central theme of nature existing for all of us.
The essays I read presented different perspectives on the morality of keeping animals in captivity. The first essay “Only Elephants Need Apply” by Stu Bykofsky, talked about how logging was stopped, which left the owners and elephants jobless. The owners were responsible for providing their elephants with about 500 pounds of food a day with no source of income. The workers chose a practical path, even though it was sad. Many of the owners took their elephants to the crowded capital, Bangkok.
Even to this day, 9/11 is one of the most respected days in our lives. On the date of September 20, 2001, former President George W. Bush took the podium to address the tragedy. It all started off in a melancholy tone, but he also sounded extremely determined. He did the best that he could that those lives were not forgotten. The quote “After all that has just passed, all the lives taken, and all the possibilities and hopes that died with them, it is natural to wonder if America’s future is one of fear.” was the beginning of Bush’s speech to all the people of America.
Patagonia started the 1% For The Planet in 2002 #B; in doing so, Patagonia led the way for major corporations to contribute into the increasingly important issue of environmental conservation. Patagonia currently invests millions of dollars annually to conservation groups and additionally has inter groups that work to save lands, practices, hunting methods, and rights of natives worldwide. Among the many projects Patagonia is currently involved in is the conservation and protection of the very namesake of the company itself, Patagonia. Patagonia is a company that allows and encourages employees to take part in a series of small trips aimed at helping the cause to Patagonia first-hand. To date, about fifty have traveled in groups of six to Chilean Patagonia- the company’s namesake- to spend three weeks digging out fence posts, rolling up wire, and removing nonnative plants from the area.
Why Al Gore is the Best Democratic Leader of All Time Al Gore is the greatest democratic leader of all time. He has single handedly raised awareness of global warming in the world through powerful speeches, movies and even by organizing concerts like live earth. Al Gore has made governments in the world change their styles to caring more for our environment and staying green. He has even changed the way the American government runs their elections due to him being a catalyst in the controversy of the 2000 election. How has Al Gore contributed to the development of democratic decision- making you might ask?
Until recently, no one would have believed that Lent, which is observed by many Christians, would have an impact on the spotted hyenas. Members of the Orthodox Tweahedo Church of Ethiopia stopped eating meat and other dairy products during Lent. Lent, is the 55 days before Easter that is observed by many Christians. They will give up certain foods during that time. Ecologists have discovered that these practices have dramatically impacted the diets of wild animals.
“Fearing a Planet Without Apes,” is an interesting article to me because I am fascinated by primates. Heck, we wouldn’t have evolved without their existence, and we are highly at risk of losing these advanced creatures that we can give our ancestry to. The writer, John C. Mitani, alerts readers that the ape population has rapidly declined over the decade and brings to light the possibility of their extinction. Why wouldn’t we protect the animals whose DNA is virtually identical to ours, especially since it would cost barely five million dollars a year? Just like many issues with this country, the reason we can’t protect our closest ancestors is because of our former president, George W. Bush.
