Truman is a real life drama created in each and every man’s life by the forces at work.Those forces , and their struggle for power which create human phenomena are what we are going to analyze from the Marxist perspective. It is important to start the analysis with the Marxist conception of history.According to Marxist Theory ‘cultural texts and practices must be analyzed to their historical conditions of production.’In this sense ,the historical setting of the Truman show is significant for understanding the ideology behind it. It is set in 1950s America where there were some positive developments in the way of life as well as racial conflicts.There was a growing increase in manufacturing and commercialisation as a vehicle of the consumerism .It was after all a time for the American Dream and a comfortable life was highly valued as a part of this dream. An answer to ‘How to you live a comfortable life? ‘were brought by the commercial industry .It helped to bring the productions to meet it’s consumers so that consumers constantly adjust and readjust their living to the standards of the popular culture.In order to keep up with the capitalistic culture people always needed to have more and more and better goods during the 1950s America. Truman Burbank as the protogonist of the story works as a sales representative in an insurance company.A salesman job requires certain qualities to be successful in capitalistic societies.He must be a positive, social, good humoured, well-liked person and he also must comply with people -on the basis of the company’s profit- using his cunning personality.However in the world created for him ,the whole society is designed to meet up the requirements of his being well-liked and successful.
