In Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda Sordino is a freshman at Mayweather high school who was raped at a party in the summer. She calls the police for help, but they arrive to find a teen party with alcohol. Everyone thinks she did it on purpose because nobody knows the truth. Melinda sees The Marthas as an exclusive group of girls with bad attitudes, while the teachers see the exact opposite. All of the teachers and faculty think The Marthas are great and caring.
