Analyse and explain the role and functions of a mosque in a Muslim community The Arabic word for mosque is a Masjid. The word mosque/Masjid means a place of prostration. This is a place where all the people gather (Usually men) to perform their five daily prayers. Other prayers are also done in the mosque for example the Jummah prayers that take place every Fridays, Eid namaaz that take place twice a year on the day of Eid. The mosque is also used at the time of death. When somebody passes away then their body is kept in a morgue until it is time for the body to be buried. This is usually found in a purpose built mosque. Sermons are also taken place in the mosque this helps to bring the ummah together where they can learn from each other and correct their incorrect thoughts. This also helps people learn more things by talking to each other and communicating with them. Sermons are usually very good as it is mainly focused on the young adults of the community as this time of their lives is very crucial. The mosque is also a place where the children, teenagers and adults can learn a variety of kitaabs and learn how to pray the Quran. This would help them expand their knowledge on Islam and hopefully go on teaching others about their religion Islam. Classrooms are found in non-purpose built these are classes that go on after school which teaches the people, who attend how to pray the Qur’an and other Islamic books. It is also a place where people declare for marriage. There is a nikah (marriage contract) where the man gives mehr (dowry) to the women in front of an audience. This is done because it has been stated in the holy Qur’an: 'And give the women (on marriage) their mahr as a (nikah) free gift" (Quran 4:4).
