A Old Age Section 1: Summary The essay “Nearing 90” is by William Maxwell publishes in 1998. It is about an old man named William who is about to turn 90 years old. William takes us back in his past where he tells us about his good childhood and where he works on a farm. The farm has been through many generations to a woman. He tells us about good and bad things he has experienced as a child. Everything seems perfect, but he concerns about one thing, and that is when you are dead you can’t read books and he really likes that. When he was a child he goes to a steamboat, but a year later the boat capsize, and many are killed. Therefor he takes nothing for granted, because he could be the one who died. In the last paragraph he tells us about his grandchildren and he is aware that he will not see them when they are grown ups. We hear about the good things and also the bad things, which there must be in all lives. Life is hard sometimes and it is especially hard to get old because you know you have to die. But we must accept it because it is a part of our life whether if we like it or not. The second text “Despite myth, research says old age is the happiest time” is about an eye-opening research, which tells us that the happiest in American, is the oldest. The attitude is a little optimistic because for everyday you get older, the happier you will be, and that seems unrealistic for me. The last text “The fear of an isolated old age” is about a lady who is 70 years old from Hornchurch. She fears that she will die, and no one will notice. She has been divorced from her husband 30 years ago. The attitude in this text is scary because this text is more realistic and an eye opener. You
