The first American settlers brought this practice with them to America. The laws for capital punishment has always varied vary from state to state, however, the usual method to carry out the executions started out as hangings in the early first centuries in Britain. Death sentences have also been carried out by other means such as crucifixion, beating to death, burning alive, firing squads, electrocution, and lethal injection. All of these methods can be considered cruel and unusual punishment. However, some in society view this as necessary, in order to deter crime. This is not agreed upon by all in our society. For instance, I do not agree with the death penalty in most of the instances it has been imposed. That leaves me to question whether or not the death penalty is a necessary social measure. Different states have different rules on when the capital punishment penalty applies and when it does not. Normally, I do not agree with applying such extreme punishment unless it can be proved without any doubt that this person who is accused is guilty. It should also be one of the heinous acts of being a serial killer or a child killer. It’s better when a true confession, with evidence to back up the confession, has been obtained. There is nothing worse than to have a doubt that the person already executed could be an innocent person. If the death penalty is going to be a necessary social measure, than it should be imposed on guidelines that are the same in every state.
