There are many reasons why America declared war on Spain in 1898, the media; the idea of expanding America and Monroe doctrine were all factors that influenced the war to be declared. The origin of war mainly started in Cuba which had good trade links with America as their economy was dependent on America by exporting tobacco and sugar and also Cuba is really closely allocated to America. America had good trade links with Cuba which is why they gained the sympathy of American businessmen and markets. The USA was influenced to war heavily by Cuba, which was still part of Spain’s American empire, In 1895 Cuba wanted to become independent however it was still under the Spanish control which made it hard to become free.
As a lot of Americans call it, the Spanish-American war was a splendid little war. The war caused America to gain a lot and lose very little. Even though there has been a few negative effects as the result of the war, the United States changed history by acquiring more ports, territories and by building bigger navies. Another reason America had an advantage over Britain was that the English citizens were tired of war. The war had begun to turn into years and citizens were getting tired of paying taxes and just the war in general. In my opinion one of the biggest advantages the colonists had was how great a leader George Washington was. American soldiers were outnumbered and not as well trained as the English soldiers, but because of Washington’s brilliance and strategy it helped the colonists prevail over Britain. On the other hand Britain also had many advantages over the Americans.

America defeated Spain in 113 days, and the Treaty of Paris was signed, giving the United States Cuba and the rest of the Spanish Empire, both in the Caribbean and the Pacific for $20 million; a bargain. As promised in the Teller Amendment, the US gave Cuba its independence but placed on them certain conditions in the Platt Amendment. One of the conditions was that the US could trade freely with Cuba.

American Expansion “From sea to shining sea” is how we know and take pride in our country today. But, America was not always this vast mass of land, and it used to be just a tiny nation that hugged one coast. The expansion of this country was a fast and rigorous process, and much harm was done on the way. American expansion did more harm than good because it resulted in sectionalism, the virtual annihilation of Indians, and economic panics. The expansion of America to the wide open west fostered sectional tensions between the North and the Old South.
Blacks at the time liked the idea because it gave them an opportunity to serve their country and have perfect unity with the whites as well as patriotic unity for themselves (doc1). With the blacks, imperialists also had government officials on their side as well. William McKinley saw imperialism as a positive thing. He said that with gaining the Philippines he had no clue what to do with them. Then he came to conclusion that they must take them over and govern over them because they where unfit for self government, trading them would be bad for business, and giving them back would cause the same problem again.
