ABSTRACT “Welfare policy successfully weathered an economic hurricane in the mid 1970’s and an ideological blizzard in the 1980’s” (Le Grand, 1990, p350). A statement suggesting that the welfare state in Great Britain had survived a crisis period in history. In the early 20th century it was highlighted in regards to the amount of poverty that men were suffering. Reforms after WWII were implemented and with Keynesian Economics there was an effort to improve the living conditions of the British people as well as the economy. Social impacts, such as the loss of life and injury are linked to the short term, whereas, the spread of infectious diseases caused by the earthquake are long term factors. Separately, economic factors can both be immediate and direct or prolonged and indirect. The earthquake causes immediate damage by destroying buildings, roads and infrastructure, but there are several long-term economic impacts that are caused by the earthquake like long term damage to business. Social, economic and environmental impacts all have short and long term consequences, this is evident in the 2010 magnitude 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti, killing over 220,000 people, the 2008 magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Sichuan province, China and the 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Japan, killing 15,890 people. It is important to evaluate whether the impacts of earthquakes tend to be more short or long term.
Two news articles one by Boston Globe [ (Earthquake in Haiti, 2010) ] and the other by CNN [ (7.0 quake hits Haiti; 'Serious loss of life' expected, 2010) ] have been summarized describing the damage that the earthquake entailed on the poor nation. The third section describes a view point on how the major governments turned a blind eye on this disaster after confirming initial donations of up to $5.3. It is estimated that only about one-tenth of the donations pledged to help Haiti overcome this disaster actually arrived. One of articles published on wordpress.com website gives a clear picture of how the empty promises were never fulfilled [ (Haiti – What Happened to All the Money?, 2010) ]. The last section describes the progress Haiti has made after the earthquake and what has been the recovery plan.

So CO2 emissions must be reduced. But we used to have periods of higher average temperatures. Besides, these emissions don’t stimulate crop growth. What is more, it is reported that the Arctic is warming 2 or 3 times faster than other ecosystems. The ice in Greenland is disappearing.
This is unlikely to be the case in the UK at the moment as low interest rates and a large budget deficit has not cause significant inflation. A further conflict with loose demand side policies might the effect on the current account. With higher economic growth and consumption, we might expect an increase in the demand for imports and a worsening of the current account. This is likely to be a fairly significant effect for the UK because it has a high marginal propensity to import – especially for manufactured goods. Furthermore, if there is inflation from the demand side policies then there will be a fall in UK competitiveness and a
