America is fat. And getting fatter. Even after all the health warnings, doctor recommendations and FDA regulations, and a massive weight loss industry, Americans are still packing on the pounds at an alarming rate. Obesity is one of the biggest problems plaguing America today. As Richard Carmona states in “The Obesity Crisis In America,” “Nearly two out of every three Americans are overweight or obese”(1). Why are Americans so overweight? I believe the three main causes of obesity in America are; the lack of motivation to exercise, the convenience of fast food, and America’s perspective that everyone is fine just the way they are. One of the primary causes of obesity is simple; lack of exercise. If we don’t even bother to workout, do we expect to magically lose weight and stay healthy? I understand that in today’s economy, people are constantly working just to maintain a descent household. This being said; it is very tough for people to find time to workout admist their busy schedules. People tend to believe that because they work out, they will immediately see results. This is a false belief, and discourages people from working out. With hardships on the economy, people do not want to spend extra money on equipments or gym memberships. In their eyes, they would rather spend it on something that will please them now, Food! “Facing fierce competition for customer loyalty, fast food chains such as Mcdonalds, Burger King and Wendy’s have promised their over-size burgers, extra-large servings for fries, and buckets of soda, all at low prices. Busy and cash-stapped families increasingly rely on take-out food for family dinners, and regular consumption of over-sized portions of fatty foods can lead to widespread obesity” (Murphy 1). When people buy fast food, it is usually because they are in a hurry and need a quick meal. With advertisements of fast food chains
