“Effects and facts of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia” Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disorder involving the degeneration of the brain; mainly affecting brain functions involving an individual’s memory, personality, behavior changes, and thinking. The progressive brain damage and dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease is irreversible. “Dementia is a term that means a person is no longer able to function on their own (Medical News Today, 2009). Dementia affects a individuals cognitive functions which is the ability to process thought. Dementia can be caused by a number of different medical conditions, and in some cases can be treated. “Alzheimer’s disease is called a family disease, because the chronic tress of watching a loved one slowly decline effects everyone” (Family Caregiver Alliance, 2010). It is the fifth leading cause of death for people sixty-five years of age and older. “Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist is credited with identifying the first published case of “presenile dementia” in 1907, a condition that is now called Alzheimer’s…show more content…
