Although there have been laws against wage discrimination in the UK for many years, women’s wages are still 20% lower than those of men. Explain the factors that might account for the continuing differences between male and female earnings? Women and men both have the same working potential, but women still get paid less than men over time. This is down to a number of reasons which are more down to biology than economics. Sexual discrimination when employers will choses one sex over the other even though all other aspects are the same. They both have the same qualifications, they are both homogenous in every sing way except in gender, this is why some people will chose to give higher wages to one of the sexes. Women have babies. Women have children and the law states that women are allowed paid maternity leave for up to six months. This is usually in the peak of the women’s career. This is when men mover ahead and women get left behind. This going in and out of the labour force will mean that they miss out on valuable experience and therefore lower MRP. It is not just due to having babies. Some employers won’t hire women because they know that women will leave to have children in the life and take time of work to do so, while still costing the company money. This sometimes determines employers to have shorter contracts with women and not to pay them as much because they will not have to pay them as much during their maternity leave. This is why some employers won’t employ women workers. Women, until recently did not receive the same levels of education. This meant that they had a lower MRP than their male counterparts. This meant that women would not get the same wage as men did, because they were not as wells skilled at the same job as men.
