Book 2 Ch. 1 The chapter begins with Father Joseph Vaillant returning from a visit to Albuquerque. He contemplates the people of Santo Domingo, who will come to hear but will not allow their children to be baptized. The Spanish have mistreated them long ago, and they do not forget. Father Joseph rides a wind-broken horse, sold to him by a Yankee trader, which he believes is evidence of his own mistreatment.
The action of Aunty handing over the flask of bourbon acts as an initiation ceremony for Billy and represents how the Indigenous community has acquired all the negative influences of Caucasian society. The significance of Aunty giving the flask of bourbon to Billy also provides an insight into how alcoholism can have a negative impact on belonging, as it is ultimately what provokes Billy to leave home and detach himself from his family. The chapter, “Leaving Paradise”, provides an insight into the negative aspects of belonging, as it is the one of the contributing factors into the eventual disintegration of May’s household. Domestic violence is also one of the issues raised in the chapter, “Leaving Paradise”. It is shown to be one of the repercussions of alcoholism.
Effects of heroin on the user The movie’s depiction of how heroin affects the drugs-users body is dead on. The movie starts out with Ryan’s attempt to kick his heroin habit on his own. One thing I learned in class is about He decides to lock himself in a cheap hotel room and suffer withdrawals by himself but wants one last hit and all that is available from his drug dealer are opium suppositories so he takes them. One of heroin’s side effects is constipation and since Ryan was already constipated from using heroin the suppositories worked against him because he instantly had diariaa in turn caused him to lose his last hit, but his addiction is so strong he still retreaves it from “the dirtiest toilet in all of Brittan”. The movie’s characters also describe the feeling of euphoria heroin gives them and all agree there is noting that can compare hence why they continue to use.
When we first are introduced to Longtree’s character he shows his sense of deception in the opening scene regarding the Camel race. Longtree races another cowboys horse for money, using his knowledge of deception for financial gain knowing that a camel would always when a race of that distance against a horse. Longtree sense of morals have been compromised for his greed for money. We also come to acknowledge that Longtree lacks integrity and morals because he and Gil premeditatedly plan to rob Steve for the Gold they are supposed to be protecting and delivering. Although Longtree initially is portrayed as a villain/bad guy he soon after has a reformation.

Termed the “reefer madness” era by some, Americans were made to believe that marijuana would cause insanity, violence, and sexual promiscuity (unknown author 1). In 1937 the Marijuana Tax Act was passed, which only served to push marijuana further underground. Thirty years later, marijuana emerged as the drug of choice for many middle class young adults.
Why did John Ford not shoot from horseback, from Ethan’s point of view, with the house in the distance? He wanted the audience to take specific notice to John Wayne’s character to fit his profile for the rest of the film. Later in the film, Ethan rides out with the other men to search for stolen cattle, only to find that Native Americans had killed them. Ethan lives off the land, symbolized partially by the opening scene, which allows him to realize why they had killed the cattle. They wanted to homestead vulnerable for attack, which is exactly what the Indians proceeded to do.
According to John, they are “cunning, but not intelligent.” Despite this, the Indians manage to surround the group and take them hostage. These scenes clearly establish John, Michael, and the Lost Boys as an analog for the white colonizer. The group wishes to locate the “Injuns” for different, yet equally othering reasons. The Lost Boys wish to locate and destroy the natives because they represent a threat, albeit an imaginary threat, to the Lost Boys’ livelihood. The film even goes so far as to group the Natives with animals that the Lost Boys wish to hunt, and explicitly state that the Lost Boys wish to fight the Natives, as in the song
