Inpatient vs. Outpatient treatment Christine R Jinks COM/155 June 29, 2013 Instructor Jennifer Murphy Inpatient vs. Outpatient treatment Are you or a family member struggling with an addiction and are confused on what to do? Reaching out and finding help can have an addict feeling humiliated and ashamed. It can become overwhelming trying to understand which treatment will be best. Understanding the treatment available and taking the step forward can change an addict’s life. There are many similarities between an outpatient treatment program and an inpatient treatment center, but the difference is important for a person’s recovery.
In the Pre-Trial Intervention Program offenders may be able to have their felony charges dismissed if they are 18 years of age or older, have no prior conviction or offense, and have been charged with substance abuse related charges. (“Broward Drug Court Treatment
Discrimination and stigma of dual diagnosis can be isolating, which often results in patients not seeking care in the first place. Individuals with a dual diagnosis face treatment challenges, this often relating to the lack of appropriate services available for patients with a dual diagnosis. Lack of funding for public substance abuse and mental health delivery systems consequently results in people with a dual diagnosis being placed on waiting lists, leaving them untreated or with the option of private mental health services. Patients may not be able to access private mental health services, due to their lack of money or inadequate private health coverage to cover the long-term treatments, which are required for patients with a dual diagnosis. Services available to a patient with a dual diagnosis are often restricted due to their co-morbid disorder, until this disorder is treated they are unable to access these particular services (Drake, Essock, Shaner, Carey, Minkoff, Kola et al, 2001).
Young people are particularly vulnerable to the effects of heavy drinking. The harms include an increased risk of traffic accidents, injuries from violence, and some studies suggest suicide (Allsop, 2010). I would seek all this information, and once finish, and once all required information have been studied and research, I would address the debate over why to raise the age limit to 21 by artlessly pointing to the evidence at hand, and at the same time, encourage and informed society about effective approaches to address the concern about alcohol related harm against young people in the
Patients are not supposed to consume drugs while they are participants of the substance abuse program. Additionally, the matter is a sensitive matter to some participants. Substance Abuse Treatment for Adolescents Substance abuse among adolescents has become a growing epidemic in the United States. Students are now experimenting with drugs at an age as low as twelve. There are several types of drugs that these children are getting a hold of and in some cases getting addicted to. Parents should be made aware of treatment options that are available for their children. If parents can be made aware of the treatment options, then maybe they can get their child help before it is too late.
In the instance that a mother is abusing drugs and applying for welfare, she probably isn’t adequately caring for her children in the first place due to the drug usage. Denying welfare assistance because she is on drugs only puts more of a burden on the children. As social workers, it is our responsibility to ensure that, first and foremost, the most important social needs are being met before thinking about other social problems like drug usage and allocation of tax
The insanity defense in criminal trials are claims that the offender should not be held responsible for their actions due to a mental illness. Their argument is that they shouldn't be given the full criminal punishment for crimes committed, because the actions were committed during a time of a mental health episode. The defendant claiming insanity is required to undergo a mental evaluation, and if they are found not guilty by the reason of insanity, the defendant is usually committed to a psychiatric facility, instead of a prison. Which diagnosis the defendant has is not as important as to how it affected their capability to carry out the crime (Reid, 2000). The “insanity plea” raises several issues, and is one of the most misunderstood
This is only one of the many stories of mentally ill people hurting themselves or others. If the government gave more funding to mental health services, this shouldn’t happen. Jails and prisons are not mental health facilities, neither are emergency rooms or hospitals. The mentally ill are most likely running out of places to go to and they should be getting treated instead. Do you want there to be less violence and suicide?
