1. The roles and responsibilities of CAA, IATA & EASA in dealing with each incident. Identify and explain the legislation that maybe relevant to each incident. The first article is about the issue of pilots suffering from cockpit fatigue that is becoming one of the major incidents happening during the flight. According to Balpa British Pilot’s Union funded UCL to conduct a study of this issue. The main issue is that the pilots are suffers from fatigues at least once a week and could worse if the flying hours would increase according to the recent EU proposal to increase flying time. The pilots admitted that felt asleep during the flight that might significantly slow the reactions of the pilot and might cause a bigger disaster. Especially it is dangerous toward the landing. Although there are warning systems that are available on the aircraft, but not loud enough to alarm pilots. Fearing for keeping their job, pilots are failed to report as they believe it is their fault. The CAA is responsible for four main areas including air safety, economic regulation, and airspace regulation and consumer protection. The rules for UK airlines are set by the UK CAA and airlines from other European countries operate under their own rules. EASA is responsible for promotion the highest common standards of safety and environmental protection in civil aviation in Europe. The Europe wants to standardise regulations across the continent. Undoubtedly, not many European countries are protecting own airlines thus much reluctant to adopt new rules that would in a way to relax the regulations for UK airlines, but make them much tougher for other European airlines with existing much weaker rules. CAA believes that the change in the European regulations will benefit UK passengers travelling on those airlines but also wants changes in other areas. The second article is about the
