AIRFIELD REFUELING OPERATION The purpose of this essay is to educate the reader, not only the importance of proper airfield refueling operations but also to outline the responsibilities of the Petroleum Supply Specialist. Prior to issuing fuel to any aircraft there are mandatory steps and precautionary measures that have to be taken. Without taking the proper precautions someone could get hurt or there could be a fuel spill. Prior to any fuel operation the fuel handler has to ensure that he or she is wearing the Proper Protective Equipment (PPE) along with his or her team. While handling fuel all personnel must wear protective gloves, eye protection and hearing protection. The gloves must be all gloves made of a material that will be resistant to fuel. The same glove is used while performing a rapid refuel fuel mission. The eye protection must be capable of preventing fuel from entering the eyes in the event of fuel splashing into the face. Shades and clear glasses are not authorized because they do not form a seal around the eyes which will prevent fuel from entering in to the eyes. So ballistic eyewear is not authorized either. Preferably the handler will use goggle type protective eye wear. Hearing protection is required while wearing a Kevlar to prevent fuel from entering in to the ear cavity and also, to prevent noise damage to the ear while performing a rapid refuel to an aircraft that has its engine running. While wearing a HARP hearing protection is not required because the HARP has built-in hearing protection. When it comes to uniform while performing a rapid refuel the handler must wear a leather boot or suitable nonporous, non static producing boot, preferably rubber soled.
