Like stated before, Schenck was the Secretary of the Socialist Party. The main reason that he was in trouble was because he was distributing leaflets that were basically arguing against the draft that was instituted in WWI. The First Amendment did not protect speech encouraging insubordination, since, "when a nation is at war many things that might be said in time of peace are such a hindrance to its effort that their utterance will not be endured so long as men fight, and that no Court could regard them as protected by any constitutional right"(Wikipedia.com). Redmond had been fighting for the home rule bill to be passed. And when the third home rule bill was introduced into the house of commons Redmond saw it as barely acceptable and could only be sold to the more extreme INP members as a starting point for future progress. There are certain MP’s that vote against their party’s instructions with no good reason. These are called rebel MP’s. An example of an MP that does this is John McDonald of the Labour party. Legislation also has to go through parliament before it becomes an official law, it has to go through various reading stages and the parliament has the power to send laws back to be changed and also the power to delay, even stop laws being made legitimate. For example, the parliament MP’s stopped the 90-day detention law when they repeatedly delayed the law.

Matt Rose Mr. C English 3 16 February 2011 Fahrenheit 451 The last time someone spoke out against the government was probably relatively recently. Americans today can talk about politics unreservedly. Though, centuries ago, this would have been punishable by death. There were two ways of going about this. One way would be conformity, to surrender to the government’s wishes by reserving any criticism for trifle thoughts.

Tragedy & Fare Based on James Madison’s quote, “A popular Government without popular information or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to Farce or a Tragedy or perhaps both,” authors John Nichols and Robert W. McChesney follow this principle throughout their book, Tragedy & Farce. Published in 2005, Tragedy & Farce is about the changing culture of journalism resulting in war, unfair elections, and the destruction of democracy. The author’s point of view is first person as he narrates the entire book. He uses quotes from interview segments from multiple sources including controversial congressmen and television anchors. The author’s thesis is the revival of democracy-sustaining journalism made up of three components.
As professor of social politics, mark kings position on the issue of banning smoking would be expected to be believed. Kings opinion piece, “banning smoking is undemocratic” appeals to the readers democratic rights to convince them that we should not ban smoking and that “we must accept the fact that people are responsible for their own lives” relying heavily on the results of a webpoll and his own research findings diverts readers to accept that in democracy individual have the right to make choices about their own life. In this opinion piece there is a inclusion of a webpoll preformed by the herald sun asking should smoking be illegal, this is put here to demonstrate what mark king is trying to get across to the reader in the opinion piece this relates to the headline in the way that it is showing that 55.8% of the public are against smoking being banned and only 44.2% of the public agree that smoking should be banned “this tells us that although most people dislike smoking they are not prepared to make it illegal”. In part of the opinion piece king tries to appeal to his reader’s democratic rights and freedom of choice, by defining what democracy is to him “democracy is about individual freedom and choice, or what philosophers call ‘enlightened self interest’” .knight reinforces his statement when he returns to it in the second half of the text he says “we must accept the fact that people are responsible for their own lives” and “if you choose to smoke, you must accept the consequences of ill health that the bad habit brings”. In the second half of this piece king uses an inclusive pronoun twice the pronoun being ‘we’ king uses these to drag readers in and make them think that they can help.
