McDonagh and Gorman’s representations of fracking: Content: this piece by Mcdonagh in the irish times talks about Letrim/Roscommon’s anti-fracking lobbying groups vs the Minister for Environment Alan Kelly. Key points being, the vote that took place within Letrim county council, and “policy 124”. While in Gorman’s Fairy Stories turn to Nightmares: the Fight against Fracking in Ireland. The key point of the article is a report by the European Parliament on the implications of fracking. Letrim county council held a meeting to vote against Fracking taking place in their area. This was the second time a vote had taken place against fracking. Even though minister for Environment Alan Kelly could overturn the outcome. Letrim councillors tried to put forward complete prohibition towards fracking but that was not legally sound, so Mr. Kelly could rule against the decision of need be. Policy 124 is a policy pursued by “no fracking Ireland” its aim is for fracking to be banned in Ireland. This policy was defined by the government as a draft-plan so is also not legally sound. Even though the policy was unanimously voted in by the council. This article is written by Marese Mcdonagh, she is a freelance journalist based in the north-west. She writes for the irish times. Fracking is obviously a matter she takes very personally. In my opinion she writes a factual piece on fracking but is slightly bios towards the anti-fracking side. While she never goes into depth as how fracking is bad for the environment, she also never even mentions the economic benefit that introducing fracking to Ireland would have. While in Gorman’s piece we see that Jamie can be a lot more bios in his argument because he has written his own article not affiliated with any newspaper.
