There is confusion, not only in the United States, but internationally, as to what defines an advanced practice nurse and the importance of advanced practicing nurses. Advanced practice nursing is important for many reasons including some less obvious reasons that should be considered. There are issues facing this title in nursing such as changing requirements, with which the professional community has had mixed feelings towards. This writing will also serve as an informational tool for people who are unfamiliar with issues facing the title, and what exactly an advanced practice nurse is. According to the Fundamentals of Nursing textbook, an advanced practice nurse (APN) is an umbrella term for an advanced clinical nurse that includes nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and nurse-midwifes. These people have advanced training in a specialized field of study. They also have a much greater deal of autonomy in their practice.
