The goal of Adlerian therapy is to focus on the feelings of the self that arise from interactions and conflicts. Adlerian therapy is a therapy of teaching, informing and encouraging the client. This form of therapy focuses on helping the client fix basic mistakes in their personal logic. This type of therapy focuses on the conscious aspects of behavior, rather than the unconscious and this is central to the development of personality. The therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client is a collaborative one. Adlerian therapist holds the belief that individuals are goal-directed and purposeful in life. As an Adlerian oriented therapist, collecting all the need data from the client is important in order to get a clear picture of the client in relation to what Adler called the life tasks. In John’s biography it indicates that he is the oldest child of nine. John is 37 year old man and is unmarried. After graduating from college he found a job and where he worked for 10 years until he was laid-off. He is now going back to graduate school after being laid-off of his job. From my understanding, John has not been in a serious relationship which means that the area of “love and intimacy” needs to be explored. In the biography, it indicates that John is in search of his purpose in life and to feel whole. In the case of John, I would concentrate on an analysis of his lifestyles including family constellations, dreams, early memories, priorities, and his ways of responding. In Adlerian therapy the birth order is important because it motivates later behavior. John is the eldest child; however, John is the “ghost child” because there was a child before him who dead at birth. Similarly, this explains why he doesn’t take on the responsibility or the leadership of his other siblings as stated in the biography. He may have taken on this role after his parents expressed
