According to the National Institute of health, ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder in children, affecting an estimated 3 to 5 percent of school-aged children (Castillo, 2013). A new study conducted by Kaiser Permanente reveals an increase in the number of children diagnosed with ADHD between 2001 and 2010. The new statistics, based on electronic health records of 850,000 children, show that nearly 4.9 percent of children between the ages of five and eleven were diagnosed with ADHD at Kaiser Permamente Southern California branches between 2001 and 2010. Earlier studies, presented in Figure 7, indicate that 9.9 percent of children between the ages of four and seventeen were diagnosed with ADHD, and 4.6 percent were taking medication (“State-based,” 2012). The 2007 study was based on 91,642 interviews conducted using a random-digit dialed landline telephone survey, and ADHD status was based on parental report. The 2003 study was conducted by the Center for Disease control in a similar manner, using the State and Local Area Integrated Telephone Survey (SLAITS). Further research is warranted to determine the exact cause or causes of this disorder. Is it genetics, lifestyle, or a combination of things? In addition, studies should be conducted on the various forms of treatment to determine which ones have the best outcomes, and whether drug treatments are keeping pace with the diagnosis. If not, why? Is it because the risks outweigh the rewards, or because not all patients have access to adequate healthcare? Clinical trial may be in order to test less harmful, low-dose medications in combination with lifestyle changes. The statistics are evident that the family environment has an impact on ADHD diagnosis. The high rate of ADHD diagnosis comes from single-parent homes that have a low family income. The children of certain circumstances are even subject to easier treatment and diagnosis of ADHD if they live in a poor community because it is cheaper and easier to change a child then the learning environment. It has been shown that the conditions of poverty are ripe to lead children into a substantially higher risk category for behavioral disorders. Race merely plays a role in identifying at risk children because African Americans and Hispanics are three times more likely to live in poverty than their white counterparts.
