“Sometimes it seems like we’re living in a prison, and the crime is how much we hate ourselves’. The Florida hate law revolves around the idea that if a person is found to have committed a crime based, or partly based, on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion of the victim, the fine and other penalties are increased as a result. The prosecution must prove that the crime was part based on prejudice rather than the random choosing of the victim by the defendant. Crime in itself is not the only issue, but how the motivation for the crime is considered. Over the years several different hate crimes have occurred in Florida. I’ve read about the deaths of homeless people, people playing music to loud, or simply standing in neighborhoods with hooded sweatshirts on. Quinnell then asked if Mohammad was Muslim or Middle Eastern, and Mohammad answered “No”. Quinnell said a racial slur, and fired 20 rounds from the pellet gun into his face. On the May 10th, 2010 Mosque Bombing located at the Islamic Center on St John’s Bluff Rd. The motivation behind this hate crime had a lot to do with religious beliefs, and the idea that those kinds of people shouldn’t be here in our area. July 31, 2012 hate crime took place because Butler constantly made racial slurs towards the children in the apartment complex, and Gant wanted to see exactly why he felt the need to address the children with such hatred, and disrespect. The last Hate crime discussed was out of spite, and anger. There was honestly no reason for that to even take place. Overall, crime is all over the world. You will never know when, where, why or how it will occur. You need to be cautious of your surroundings at all times, and stay on your toes. Never let your guard down or get caught
