Brian Flynn Business Policy Chapter 4 Acer Group Business-level strategy is an integrated and coordinated set of commitments and actions the firm uses to gain a competitive advantage by exploiting core competencies in specific product markets. Acer Group has a business-level strategy of controlling their costs. They achieve this by focusing on indirect sales. Their competition uses both direct and indirect sales, and this drives up their costs. Acer Group believes in focusing on one section of the market to lower their costs and increase their revenues. The relationship between customers and business-level strategies can be broken down into terms of who, what, and how. Who is determining which customers to serve. Acer Group has decided to focus their attention on serving individual people and small to medium size businesses. Acer does not market their products to large businesses and corporations. What is determining which customer needs to satisfy. Acer has decided to focus their efforts on servicing customers who want cheap computers and netbook computers. Acer has already grabbed a 32% share of the netbook market. How is determining core competencies necessary to satisfy customer needs. Acer does this by limiting their costs. This gives Acer the ability to sell their computers at a lower price than their competition and gives them a competitive advantage. Acer has done a great job of this and that is why they are thriving as a company. There a different business-level strategies that a company can use. These strategies are cost leadership, differentiation, focused cost leadership, focused differentiation, and integrated cost leadership/differentiation.
