Since she burst on to the radar of the music industry, Lana Del Ray has quickly become one of the modern-day music success stories. She has shown how an artist who represents stereotypical convections of the indie genre, such as her authentic looking rise to fame, can be marketed in such a way that appeals to the masses. Since she released her breakthrough single ‘video games’ on Stranger Records, a small and little known record label that seemingly lacked the marketing power of a larger label, her ‘indie’ representation was established. This was done very intelligently, as before the release of ‘video games’, Lana Del Ray has already been signed to one of the industries most powerful labels, Universal. Her debut single rose to popularity through less-mainstream marketing such as via magazine coverage including heavy coverage in the NME along with radio plays on worldwide radio stations, meaning her name was quickly spread and her song increasingly popular. She released her single initially on YouTube, a decision that meant that her song was widely available and quickly became a viral Internet hit. Her popularity was emphasized when she appeared on the Jonathon Ross show, even before the release of an album. Her success came off the back of her unique approach to her music and a style, which was shared with few in the industry. Lana Del Rey’s debut album “Born to Die” received mixed reviews by critics upon its release, scoring 61 out of 100 from one of the internet’s most popular ratings website “Metacritic”, indicating that her album was not going to be as successful as her previous debut single. Del Rey also received negative from BBC music, which described the album as “not perfect”.
