Affective characteristics of students in relationship with their achievement had been a subject of investigations for many years. It is claimed that the academic success is directly or indirectly connected to many factors including affective characteristics. The affective factors like attitude, self-efficacy, motivation, and anxiety would effect students’ performance on account of the academic achievement (Kan & Akbaş 2006) According to science educators, the important goal of school curriculum should be the development of a positive attitude toward science (Aiken & Aiken, 1969; Koballa, 1988). They believe that a positive attitude towards science intern develop a positive attitude towards learning setup in schools. Although there is a varied…show more content…
Depth interviews are the best way to draw an individual’s real attitude towards a thing, but in schools, it is not practical to conduct an in-depth interview among students to find out their attitude. So the scaling techniques are mainly serving the purpose. Among them Likert scale is the widely used one. Here, the respondents are asked to indicate the degree of agreement or disagreement with each one of the statements given. Each degree of agreement disagreement is set a numerical score and the total score is calculated by summing the scores from all statements. Likert scale are of ordinal type and they do not measure the differences in…show more content…
They are based on the idea that items can be arranged along a continuum in such a way that a person who agrees with an item or finds an item acceptable will also agree with or find acceptable all the previous items. In Guttman scale, each score represents a unique set of responses and therefore the total score of every individual is obtained. To know the exact point at which the students are having difficulty can easily be assessed with the help of Guttman scaling. Here the present study demonstrates the usefulness of Guttman scales in comparison with Likert scales to measure the attitude towards specific content areas in school subjects by using periodic table, chemical bonding and organic chemistry as illustrations. Objectives 1. To find out the effectiveness of Likert scales on predicting achievement in chemistry. 2. To compare the effectiveness of Likert scales with Guttman scales in predicting achievement in chemistry. Methodology A survey was employed to find out the attitude towards chemistry and its prediction on achievement in chemistry. The attitude was measured using two scales of measurement namely Likert and Guttman. The selected topics in chemistry were periodic table (PT); chemical bonding (CB) and organic chemistry (OC).
