Period 2 During Abraham Lincoln's presidency he had to work to bind a divided nation into one. Lincoln's second inaugural address was set out for the north and the south to push them towards one and to forget, or rather get over, the cultural differences between the north and south to end the civil war and once again unify the nation as one. Lincoln's use of diction, structure, and tone help to give his speech great power and help him to get his point across of the people to the united states. President Lincoln begins his speech with a long lengthy sentence structure all separated by commas. Lincoln then adds in, "these slaves constituted a particular and powerful interest" is the shared religion between the colored slaves, the slave owners and the people in the north. Commutating the shared religion in Lincolns speech puts a huge impact on his speech and his purpose of equality and peace. Lincoln also has a major shift in subject to, "God the almighty" he repeats the subject of God multiple times and uses "he", God is an alive almighty, all-knowing person. Lincolns use of God repeats his purpose of equality . Back during the civil war every man, woman, and child had trust and relationships with god. With this Lincoln is putting the fact in to the peoples head that every man is the same, and since everyone is the same they should have equal rights and opportunity. Lincoln coveys his purpose through his entire speech by using the authority of god to drive home his purpose. All confederate and union trust in one god and in this they have unity.
